Problem there is that the BBQ tick seemed to occur more frequently with the switch to full synthetic. I'm actually delaying my first oil change (I'm at 3000 miles) because I am afraid of the BBQ tick, so now I am rewarded with this new rattle before the first oil change.
It seems like alot of previous gen owners switched to 5w30 full synthetic with no issues and no ticks, rattles, etc.

5w20 from what I am reading seems to be unique to the US and that overseas recommend 5w30. Can anyone overseas confirm this?

For those of us with the extended warranty, switching to 5w30 would give Ford an excuse to deny warranty work. I suppose hey wouldn't know if I changed it myself, but they can test oil for weight, correct?

Ford recommends 5w50 for track events.... A change from 5w20 to 5w30 isn't going to void a warranty. The recommended oil weights are not set in stone values and a slight change in weight isn't going to destroy an engine.

Also for reference: GT350 recommends 5w50

I have already gone full synthetic.... didn't stop the noise. No change with 5w20 or 5w30

The slightly thicker 5w30 might help quiet down the engine some.

You tried both weights already?

Just checked the manual. 5w30 is one of the recommended oils listed. I will be going straight to Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w30 soon.

I was thinking the same.... Ill fly down to Lebanon and get a S/C stang. I wonder if insurance companies will flag the car as supercharged....
The VIN will come up with the stock vehicle info. I recall seeing a video where they talked about this and insurance premium was same as any other similar Mustang in stock form.

Interesting. European manufacturers were the first to combine Direct Injection and Port Injection. From discussions I had with a Mercedes engineer about this, it was done for two reasons...
  1. To minimize particulates emissions that are a by-product of Direct Injection. (A requirement to meet Euro 6 emissions)
  2. To eliminate customer complaints of injector noise at low speed / low load

Since the 2018 5.0L uses dual injection systems, I was under the impression that it operated the same way as the German systems. Port Injection at low load (therefore no injector noise at idle or low speeds) and Direct Injection beyond a certain threshold where normal engine noise masked the injector noise. If that is true, then is it logical to conclude that most of what you guys are hearing is NOT injector noise?
Ford does utilize the same technology. Go to around 15min. in.

Actually, the 2018 owner's manual recommends 5W-30 for track use. In the 2015~2017 owner's manual, it doesn't even address what oil viscosity to use for track use.

Agree that using 5W-30 all the time isn't going to hurt anything, and will provide better engine protection in the long run. Ford specs 5W-30 for the same engine in foreign countries, and only really specs the 5W-20 in the USA to get "CAFE credits".

Just received my official offer letter. Ford is a little backwards. Already started the refund process. The offer letter asks me to decide if I want a replacement or refund lol.

I guess they made that decision for you. :ford:

I am going to be completing my first oil change today. Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w30. I’ll report back if it effects the rattle at all. If it is truly piston slap then the thicker oil should at least change the noise some.
