When you buy a Mustang GT used, you don’t know all the garages that worked on your tires.

As you know lug nuts on the S550 Mustangs have issues with distortion and swelling. Look at some of my worst lug nuts as they removed them for the last time. They were under orders to remove them at all cost, even if the lug nut was ruined.

There is at least one lawsuit and TSB’s out on them. I did not know I had a problem with my lugs until it went to the Ford dealer for service and tire rotation.

They refused to rotate the tires since 14 of the lug nuts would not fit exactly into their 21 mm wrench and they refused to use a larger 21.5 mm socket. They wanted to charge me $144 for new lug nuts!! I guess the local tire shops had been torquing them really tight and using any size that would fit on them.

Needless to say…I became concerned with my 21mm “X” tire iron would not remove them…one flat and I would be stuck!!

Gorilla brand makes 21 mm replacements the exact size for Mustangs! I bought 20 for $60 from CJ Pony. Now..my “X” tire iron fits perfectly. Other dealers sell them too.

Check your lugs! Be sure you can get them off.

Thanks

Suggest using a 6 pt socket on lugs, not the 12 pt socket pictured. 12 pts will destroy the finish.

A quality impact socket (flat black) fits perfectly. 13/16" socket works, too.

Use only 5 point sockets on lugs of any variety, especially at 150 torques.

Thanks for the suggestions concerning socket sizes. My 21 mm "X" wrench has less points and should work better than the socket shown.

I will use that.

Thanks

Yeah, I got rid of OEM ones long long time ago as many people did here.

I bought the chrome Gorilla brand from CJ Pony. They also come in black.

Other sponsors also sell them in the correct size for S550's. Not sure if the GT 350's require a different size.

Gorilla. I have the set that includes 20 individual locking lug nuts, which is more expensive, but more secure, in my opinion. The stock lugs are garbage, and should be thrown away immediately.

Agree the factory lug nuts are POS’s!

My prior 2016 S550, the Ford Service Center replaced ALL of the lugs under warranty (at the time, car had over 30k on it) - didn’t cost me anything for lug replacement.

No one should be paying for Ford replacement lugs if still covered under the 3/36.

Any reference or link to the stated lawsuit? Or TSB?
