PP2 vs. Lund Tune - how much am I leaving on the table?

Save your money on the tune. I had a Lund flex tune. It was great but I wanted more. Even running E85 I still wanted more. I have the 3.31 gears and put down 427 to the tire with E85 but my torque was low at like 350. The dyno is pics are posted in the dyno section. I just got my ROUSH Phase 2 supercharger and wow what a difference. There is instant power everywhere! Just be ready to buy new tires, clutch...

That's what the OP was asking in general, there's not much benefit going to an after market tuner on pump gas over what FP is currently offering for the 2015-2017 GT's. If he's wanting big mid-range punch, he needs either shorter gearing with the PP2 (I think he has 3.31's, his sig doesn't say PP GT, just Manual) to get a little higher up in the mid range when merging or go to a whole new platform.

Honestly however, going to a SS with the LT1 6.2 isn't going to buy you anything but more low end torque either (I see he's not a fan of the big boat Dodge offerings). A Power Pack 2 5.0's power band is literally almost identical to the LT1 6.2's just shifted 500 RPM higher. I mean IDENTICAL wheel HP for wheel HP.

Here are some Area Comparrisons (a 4,000 RPM rev range) of the different Power Packs relative to a stock LT1 6.2 in a 2016 SS 6M:

The SS is geared taller however, so unless you geared it down (shorter final drive), you won't have any more access to the mid-range than with a PP GT. Based on the OP's signature I'm assuming he might be running 3.31's which are a bit tall for acceleration even with PP2 power band. Huge mid-range punch honestly is only going to come from a Super Charger if you want to stay on 93 pump gas. Even E85 isn't a "massive" increase. Noticeable I'm sure, but nothing spectacular compared for FI.

3.55 or 3.73's are good for Manuals and give you a decent rev range in 2nd and 3rd with stock tire diameters. You probably couldn't tell much of a difference between 3.55 and 3.73, but you can tell the difference between 3.31 and 3.73 in a GT or even the Ecoboost.

I think a 3.73 Torsen diff would be the best bet unless he has a PP GT and not a base. That will get you higher up in the rev range. I typically am at about 4~4.5k RPM when rounding a curved exit ramp before I can really punch it. Acceleration is VERY strong with 3.73's at that RPM range with my Power Pack 2. At some point your at the limits of 93 pump gas and starting to really sacrifice reliability for barely noticeable gains...or you have to go to more exotic fuels or FI.
Great write up. I almost bought into the hype of a aftermarket tune but after reading the graphs you have and comparing, its just not worth it. 5-10whp at the most is just not worth the hassle. Thats also why i havent done headers.

You guys are awesome. Thanks for the additional detailed replies. My car is a non-PP. I wanted a PP car, but when I saw my car, the non-PP, White Platinum/black leather interior with the Premium Package sitting on the lot, "Take my money!" may have escaped my lips. :D Rear is 3.55, stock from the factory. I think a 3.55 rear comes with the optional 20" wheels?

E85 is not an option either. We have it in my city, just not everywhere. It was bad enough after the hurricane that hit the Texas coast when only Costco had premium gas for 3 weeks...if my car was E85, I'd have been walking.

Putting in 3.73s is a possibility, though as I understand it, if I go FI I'm probably going to need shorter gears than the 3.55 I have now.

This is all learning for me and you guys make that possible. :) Thank you very much for your tutelage and guidance.

I think for me with my DD, FI is the way to go. Whipple with their software that lets you tune back boost really seems like the way to go. Keep it at 80% for DD, then crank it to 100% for strip or serious screwing around. I do know that with a Whipple/FI comes new halfshafts/driveshaft/OPG right off the bat. So my "can't afford a Whipple right now" takes all that into account. Going FI isn't just the cost of the power adder, it's the total cost of the power adder and all the stuff you need to upgrade to keep the car from going boom. I baby my car maintenance and cleaning-wise, but I drive it like I stole it half the time. It's got to be bullet-proof. I've never been happy with the stock shifter; when I shift hard it feels like the thing could rip out in my hand. I'll be putting in a MGW race spec short throw this summer. I bought it already...it looks lovely in the box. :rolleyes: Just trying to find the time to put it in.

^ This. If you want a SUBSTANTIAL gain in power and you want "instant" power, a super charger is the WAY to go. Otherwise your only going to see very small incremental gains in power that would be difficult to even notice.

If your on 3.31's I think 3.73's would probably be your best bang for buck. It's not going to be night and day, but 3.73's work very well with the Power Pack 2. Nice crisp throttle response and plenty of mid-range (your keeping your rev range higher up in the power band more often).

On factory sized 275/40R19's with 3.73's your top speed in 2nd is 65 and in 3rd it's 93.7 mph with a tire roll out diameter of 27.7 (stock). Want even more kick without going to 4.10's? Run 285/35R19 tires, roll out is 26.9 to slightly better gearing advantage yet. That's a popular track size because of the traction, feedback and side wall stiffness a 35 profile and 285 width tire provides.

There's also Tesla...talk about suck you back in your seat instant power! Electric FTW at up to 97% efficiency :D
