Titled: "The New High-Performance Fords Could Fail the Same Way the Pontiac GTO Did"

http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a33162/when-dealers-attack/?src=nl&mag=rdt&list=nl_rdt_news&date=040717

The author makes a lot of good points IMHO. It just worries me that Ford Performance works so hard to make great performance vehicles at reasonable prices that end up sitting on lots after being pushed out of their target price range.

Quote from the article:
"The dealers will misuse their additional-markup privileges to kill the market for the Focus RS and the standard non-R versions of the Shelby GT350. Then, after the market dries up, they will complain to Ford that the cars don't sell, which will give the bean counters additional ammunition to refuse requests for future fast-Ford projects. Before you know it, the closest thing you'll be able to get to a factory-build Ford sporting vehicle will be the tape-and-stripe packages that reigned supreme forty years ago in the Malaise Era."

Totally agree. It'd be great if they had a set price.

The whole allocation process is disgusting. Be nice if any Ford dealer could sell as many high performance Mustangs as he wants.

Excellent points. FoMoCo is letting their dealers ruin the business end of their halo performance cars with their ridiculous pricing.

When I was in the business office completing the purchase of my car, the financing guy said that many people place deposits for the GT350s, RSs, but that most walk away from their deposit money and never buy the cars.

A good read. I think so far Ford has managed to move a lot of these cars (I could be wrong - I haven't seen the sales figures) despite these markups. But yeah, I see two big problems here:

1) The traditional & terrible U.S. dealer system which allows for these terrible markups (and everything else we hate about the dealership experience)

and

2) Ford isn't cranking out enough of these cars, especially the GT350R. If even Matt Farah is having a hard time securing a 350R then you have a major problem. I know these things have hand-crafted engines, carbon fiber wheels and lots of other expensive low-volume parts, but that's still no excuse for the needlessly low production numbers, especially when we're talking about an in-demand variant of one of the most popular cars from one of the world's largest automakers. I get that it's harder to make than a regular Mustang, but it's not a freakin' Porsche 918.

It is a shame we don't have socialism. It offers the greatest freedom -- freedom from greed.

I am kidding

It's a shame Ford doesn't do what Chrysler(FCA) does with Hellcats. If you markup a car and it sits on the floor and doesn't sell-then the dealer gets no more of that model. It does Ford no good that car sits on the floor, doesn't sell, the car is not on the road to get maximum exposure(where average consumers who don't frequent websites/magazine) can see it, maybe inquire about it, then buy it: to drive more sales. These dealers only hurt the industry. And in the end the cars eventually never get produced again.

A GT350 with a 8,250 redline and a warranty??!! I'll take it. But the dealers near me have a different idea. Sure I could roll the $10k or more each dealer around here is asking into the monthly payments. But why would I get bent over at the dealer? Screw them. That dirty taste from being done like that at a dealer would last a lifetime. And when time comes to sell or trade-I will never recoup that $10k or any portion of it. A year or more from now they'll be calling. But problem for Ford is, I would have already have bought a competitor's comparable performing car and everybody would have lost in this go round.

Just sell the car to me at msrp and we would not be having this dilemma. In the meantime, I will just stick with my "regular" Mustang.

It's not really a funny joke though, because we do have socialism and it's the government that prevents us from buying directly from Ford and bypassing the dealers.

I think you're confusing socialism with crony capitolism.

(if you were kidding why hide it in white text?) If you want socialism move to Venezuela. Let me know how that works out for you. While it sounds nice in a vacuum, the shit doesnt work as has been proven time and time again. Ford could easily fix the problem if they actually wanted to... You charge over MSRP for our cars, you no longer get said vehicles now or in the future. Watch that stupid ass ADM disappear overnight.

Or you can shop around and find another dealer willing to sell you one at the price you want...like I did! If those dealers want to have those cars sit on their floorplan, let them. I will just buy it elsewhere.

Great article. I would have a 2016 Track Pack sitting in my garage today if it wasn't for the huge ADM's. I started the process of trying to acquire one, but the markups and dealers pulling a sale because they were able to procure a higher ADM from someone else turned me off to the whole thing.

Good article. If I could get a GT350 at MSRP I would seriously consider it. At MSRP it's a performance bargain. For 10-20K markup? No way.

I'll never pay an ADM for any car. I worked at a Dodge dealer when the SRT-4 came out and they wanted to charge me $2k over MSRP. I laughed and called my friend down in Miami who worked at a Dodge dealer down there, needless to say I got my SRT-4 in the color I wanted and paid EP which was like $800 below invoice. Left the dealer tags on it when I drove it to work the next week....they didnt like it too much. People with more money than sense pay ADM's, you almost never will recoup that money and its just free profit for the dealer, no OEM sees that money.
