So the next Mustang will share a platform with the Explorer???

Ford’s five flexible vehicle architectures – body-on-frame, front-wheel-drive unibody, rear-wheel-drive unibody, commercial van unibody and BEV – are paired with module “families” that address the power pack, electrical pack and vehicle configurations. Seventy percent of each vehicle’s engineering will be driven from this new architecture approach, with 30 percent of content – including grilles, hoods, doors and more – customized for each vehicle.

Why would they get rid of 4WD in the Explorer? Or would it still be able to engage to 4WD but be in RWD otherwise?

Changing the term doesn't make it any less ridiculous.

RIP Mustang.
You have it exactly backward. RIP Mustang if it can't share a platform - just has it has for most of it's history.

My 2013 explorer was front wheel drive only.

Its probably so they can fit a 3rd row in the mustang, since thats what's selling.

The press release says they are replacing something like 70% of the lineup with this. It doesn’t say all vehicles run on this.

I think you're reading that wrong. It's 70% of each vehicle, not 70% of the lineup.

Reduced platforms mean that it is now more cost effective to upgrade as more cars will be affected as compared to currently Mustang's own individual platform. This means rigidity and light weighting makes more sense and therefore higher chance of happening similar to Toyota's Global Architecture or Volkswagen MLB.

Here's a quote of what Toyota's platform entailed:
"In designing the platform, engineers have repositioned and lowered the center of gravity of powertrain components. They’ve also focused on reducing the weight of the size of certain components, while at the same time increasing overall body rigidity by as much as 30-65 percent thanks to higher strength materials and new laser welding techniques."

When was the last time Mustang even had a clean slate platform anyway? SN95, S197, S550 are modified versions of each other. A whole revamp is a good thing. Weight savings is the future, and if the Explorer gets aluminumized so will the Mustang with the platform costs shared between each other.

Wonder if the '22MY Mustang will still be on CD6, as has been mooted....or whether that platform/architecture gets renamed.

Either way, CD6 was expected to underpin a new RWD Explorer and Mustang. And potential Lincoln variants of both (a Lincoln Explorer is a safer bet than a Lincoln coupe though)

Excellent observations and rationals.

Yep, this is not “new information”
Agree with the Lincoln “Explorer” rather than Lincoln coupe.
Sure would like to see a coupe though, but it wouldn’t sell in great enough numbers to justify production.
