most people have their theories about break ins. the manual says "Avoid driving too fast during the first 1,000 mi" which is super vague. whats too fast? accelerate quickly or like dont got 100mph?

It seems to me the people who baby their cars during a 'break-in' period are the people with the most complaints about noises and oil consumption.

I would tune it right after you get a baseline dyno done first. Putting the car on the dyno is not nearly as hard on the car as actually driving it (very little load and no wind resistance). I have an 18 and got a tune on it as soon as I could get the flash tuner and tune sent to me. Probably about 600 miles in. I have 6500 miles on it so far with about 5500 of that tuned on e85.

I waited till 10k miles to get used to the car and to see if any problems developed during this time

TBH I like to toss on at least 10 - 15k miles before I start messing with tunes. Gives you plenty of time to push the engine/car to make sure there aren't any warranty defects and the engine is nice and set in.

I wonder how many have actually had major mechanical failures with a tune and had the dealer deny them?

My friend took his full bolt on, boss IM, cat delete, tuned 13 back to the dealer because a 3rd gear grind and they rebuilt his transmission under warranty. It just depends on the Dealer and specifics of the situation. If you melted your pistons because the car ran horribly lean then they will probably deny a claim due to the tune. If your engine has a mechanical failure that has been known to be commonly defective on stock vehicles then it is less likely that they will deny it. There is no question that you are risking more trouble with getting warranty claims approved once you have modded your car but that is DEPENDING ON THE DEALER, and IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM THAT IS NOT YOUR FAULT.

I did the Lund tune on my 15'GT at around 3500 or after the first oil change.

I will probably do the same on the 18'.

I currently have 620 miles on it, and the break in has been less than "babied".

It's going to be one of the fast ones.

First mod on mine was a catback at 975 miles. Tune was done at 2800 as I waited a month until Memorial Day Sale :-)

Curious to hear other people's thoughts on this....

I don't think I've babied my car, also not beat on it. I guess I'm somewhere in the middle.
