Tint

Hello everyone, I'm from the US, living in Italy for a few years, and I plan to travel around Europe more once I receive my mustang; already been to Austria, Germany and Slovenia (I love Austria and Germany). I don't like people being able to see into my vehicles. What are the tint laws, are they enforced, and can you be ticketed for having illegal tint in one country even if your vehicle is registered in a country where it is legal--and do you know if there are any military clauses, since it would be a US spec vehicle.

Poland, maximum tint is 30%.
But i have 80% in my main car for 4 yrs, In mustang i have 65%. There is no problem at at all, even during control.

In Italy it is as Gryphon said: don't know how much % you are allowed, but you are allowed to tint only the rear side windows. Not allowed on rear window or side driver\passenger windows. And obviously not on the front window
I think this is one of the few laws that are the same across Europe (yeah this is strange!)

We're allowed to tint the rear window though - it's the van rule. Vans can have blocked rear side and rear, and no rear view mirror, but even vans need clear side windows and windshield.

For my part, I decided to not bother with the tiny little windows behind the b-pillar, but I am blacking the crap out of the rear window.

If your tint is wrong you'll be stopped here and can't drive further without having it fixed I remember reading about someone tinting front side windows, got stopped, refused to remove them, then got a friend to deliver new side doors with clear windows which he then changed in front of the controller before driving along...

Not sure how they'd handle foreign registered cars - but...

Rear side windows behind the B pillar can be tinted, rear window only of you have a rear-view mirror on the right-hand side of your car (which all cars have these days).

Germany - B-pillar and back. Can be as black as you want. In front of B-pillar - nothing!

For German regged cars, the tint needs to be approved.... :frusty:

Not sure if its EU wide but what I know from the Netherlands is that you are allowed to actually tint you side windows and front windshield but cannot dip under 55%. But most vehicles already have a 25% tint on the front and side windows so gotta be careful adding more tint to those as it will drop quicker then you expect.

Seeing other comments from different countries makes me think these are not actually EU regs but are different per country.

Again, though, vans (particularly panel vans) make this sort of law impractical. I'm sure it was considered and rejected for that very reason. And since vans per definition must be allowed to have no rear apertures, cars benefit from this same rule as light vans are registered as cars.

I would argue its more dangerous to not have a tint. If you are behind someone without a tint you tend to stick closer to him because you can see the car in front of him brake. While if you do not feel save behind a tinted car you naturally take more distance.

I personally feel more relaxed driving behind someone without a tint though.

I think a reasonable tint of 35% or so all around is fine here in the South of the US. I mean Sun here beats down ALL DAY LONG FOR HOURS ON END. Tint reduces that GLARE and the heat inside the car considerably. 35% you can still see through.

For the UK the windscreen must allow 75% of light through and sides in front of B pillar 70%. You can brick up the rears if you wish.
