Smoke screen?
Yup. Completely stock and after idling about 6-7 minutes it began to smoke. Drive it, no smoke. Drive it hard, no smoking. Idle.... Poof.

And mine is certainly not the only one.

Supposedly a turbo seal. I will know soon and post up.

What a POS article. Driving a rental EB with AT, no performance package and probably junk 87 fuel in it and then trashing Ecoboost Mustangs in general... I guess he is just trying to provoce to get readers with the mindset that all Publicity is good.

So everyone was fine with the performance of the Mustang GT in 2005-2010, and now that the V6 and I4 Mustang engines are producing pretty comparable torque and power to those pre-Coyote GTs, suddenly 300+ HP/TQ isn't good enough for everyone? I don't think expectations have changed that much in 5 years where this amount of power and torque is suddenly underpowered or lackluster. Not to mention, the S550 V6s and Ecoboosts can out-handle the S197s in most respects.

Reviewers will bash the non-GT versions of the Mustang no matter how good they are. I'm sure soon enough there will be a stock 400+ HP/TQ EcoBoost Mustang and the reviewers will still bash it because it's not a V8 GT.

This guy had his mind made up before he even drove the car, and he pretty much says so in the intro.

Naw, don't be alarmed. There are many that do not get the idea of a composed and sophisticated version of the Mustang. Many express hate at the driving dynamics vs. older models, and many more detest the notion of a 4-cylinder ecoboost. To me this guy is trying to be like the 'experts' that write for C&D or R&T and echo the 'if it ain't Ferrari powered and drive like a GTI then it isn't worth my time' style of ridiculousness prevalent in the ragazine world.

All I can say is that some of the V8 guys must really feel threatened by this car or they would just ignore it. Instead, some trash it relentlessly (2 seconds slower on a several minute lap time at the track is called "horribly slow" for instance). And, the fear is for good reason; with CAFE standards on already on the books the V8 days are certainly numbered. Hell, any gasoline powered car's days are numbered. To get CAFE of 54.5 MPG in 10 short years all cars will need to be electric in order to sell pickups to businesses since the environmental wienies in the EPA decided to include light trucks in that new CAFE standard. The environazis want light trucks banned completely and they are getting their way. Unless a new administration can reverse this in 2017 you can pretty much kiss all this fun goodbye.

Nonetheless, the new 2.3L in the Focus RS is rumored to be up to 360 HP now so watch for that Ford Racing calibration coming soon for the 'stang. My guess is that the cal will be available when the development on the RS is done.

When the EB Stang has been around for 5 years, no one will write these anymore.

This seems a little teeny tiny bit exaggerated. I mean, we could have said this back in 70s with the advent of the EPA. But Detroit just made more efficient and clean-running V8s. The story could just repeat itself with new CAFE standards. With Corvettes reportedly getting 35 mpg from their V8s (during very mild driving), it seems to already be starting.

I think V8s will still be around in 20 years. They'll just be more efficient and even more powerful.

Now I gotta weigh in. No one compares the 428i to the M4, or the Audi A4 to the S5 so not sure why this is something to debate? When the Germans introduced their 2.0T engine, no one lost their minds. It was simply more options at different price points. I absolutely love my TY Ecoboost PP the same as others love their GT's or the V6 owners love theirs. More options at different price points.

I don't understand all these reviews of the Ecoboost being underpowered. Performance wise it's right up there with the 4.6 and everybody loved that engine. I think if the Ecoboost put out 500 horsepower everyone will still say "Get the V8". People just can't accept a 4 cylinder in a Mustang. As much as I wanted a 5.0, it was just too expensive and I wasn't going to live above my means just to say I own a GT. The base Ecoboost PP fit my budget and I do not regret my decision. Maybe if you're used to driving 500 horsepower and up cars I could understand saying that the EB is underpowered. But the average Mustang buyer doesn't drive high horsepower cars and I'm sure they would find the Ecoboost extremely satisfying. Reviews like this really get under my skin. I need to stop reading them. That's it. I'm done ranting.

I think there is a fear our there that Ford is going to ditch the V8 in a few years; and honestly I think that's a somewhat legitimate fear. Prior to the new Ford GT being unveiled I thought it was completely laughable that Ford would completely abandon V8 production, but the fact that they used a V6 Ecoboost for their top performance car, without even having a V8 as an option, is pretty scary to think about.

I agree with you that options/diversity is always a good thing; that's, after-all, in the Mustang's DNA. But if Ford is planning on ditching the V8 in future 'Stangs I'm going to have some serious issues (as will many others).

Honestly, I think that is the place where some of the "infighting" if you will is coming from more than anything else.

The Raptor is ditching the V8 too.

I think he was out to slam this car before he even got in the drivers seat. I think he is probably one of those "5.0 or nothing" guys, which is fine. But don't slam the eco just because it doesn't deliver what the 5.0 can deliver. After all, it isn,t supposed to.
His review is biased, and just trash. Dismiss this guy if you are still considering purchasing an eco Mustang.....
It's Jalopnik, all their reviews are trash. Seems most of the reviews there are written by 14 years olds without a license yet.

The Ecoboost is one second slower than the 5.0 Mustang, therefore making the it garbage and slow. Don't you know?

Hey, I don't agree with his review at all. But, what do I know, I only drive the car every day and am therefore biased toward justifying my purchase.

Guys. I just figured it out. This review is satire. I can't believe we missed it for two days but just think about it. Just read the review.

He first manifests the worst stereotypes about someone who doesn't like the EB, promising that he wants to like it, but just can't, bemoaning how it somehow violates the sanctity of the American Musclecar, and saying no one else should like it. Then he finally gets to the review in which he justifies his not being able to like the EB with 1) things that have nothing to do with the EB (rear seats, transmission) and 2) complaints about the EB that any sane person knows to be untrue (too much turbo lag, low performance).

Guys, this guy knows how silly his review looks. He did it on purpose. It's satire. It's just the very best kind of satire where it's subtle enough that you don't even realize it at first.

how the hell is someone going to review a car based on a RENTAL that already had 1100 miles on it?
