The Marmite arrived late tonight.
Smells like I was expecting: a very umami salty syrup.
I thought I went light enough…nope! This stuff does taste good but is so so salty.

Buttered sourdough on top. Plain

I’ll try it again tomorrow but lighter.

I can definitely see it being great in rich sauces, cottage pies and those great things.

Vegemite Should be here Tuesday.

It's like a very concentrated beef bouillon with all the beef essences, yet zero beef. But that salt! I don't go shy with salt when I cook, but damn. That stuff is no joke.

I'm very interested in trying it where it's an ingredient and not a spread.

Bought a charcoal barbecue.
I didn’t realise there was any other type of BBQ … :like:

(That’s fighting talk for the gas BBQ people … :giggle:)

That food looks great ! :sunglasses:

I looked back through my posts and this much is about my limit on plain toast (and this is a crust) i.e. a bit less than your dosage :

I can go much thicker (i.e. a little thicker than your dosage) if other foods are added, I particularly like it with eggs. Microwave poached on crumpet :

Good work mate.

Oh thank heavens...the real stuff is on its way :giggle:🇦🇺

Vegemite is salty too but more savoury with a bit of sharpness.
I’ve yet to try it, I might need to source some … :like:

Say what ...? You're missing out on all that antipodean colonial goodness . Would be interesting to get your thoughts on the differences.

I always found Marmite a bit sweeter somehow but I have a savoury tooth so probably hence why I prefer Vegemite.

It’s a sad day today (national holiday for the queens funeral), so I decided to go full on Brit mode and do a cooked breakfast for the family :

Eldest's and my misses :

Mine :

Don’t forget the toast :

1663583882400.jpeg

Tomato sauce for the youngest and brown sauce (Daddies) for the rest of us :sunglasses:

We don’t have these very often and it’s quite difficult to get everything ready at the same time, but I just about managed it - and we (just) got finished in time for the service (the main service has just finished on live TV).

We will now drink copious amounts of tea whilst watching the rest of the proceedings.

I don’t think I will need much more to eat today, but sticking with the Brit theme we have some scones for later. I was hoping to make (with help from the kids) homemade jam, but the blackberries on the back field still aren’t ready yet :frown:

Alright. I made a cottage pie for diner tonight. Instead of the usual beef bullion I'd use, I swapped it for a teaspoonish of Marmite instead.

I almost always swap the potatoes for mashed cauliflower to keep the carbs down and the veggies up; tastes better too IMO. No salt added; just the Marmite.

Anyway, it was really delicious! New go to recipe for sure. :like:

The Vegemite arrived today. I fixed a couple slices of the same sour dough loaf from Marmite night. Buttered them up...

I like the Vegimite so much more on toast! Second slice was nearly as covered as yours.

It's still salty, but not as harsh with the salt?

I could definitely enjoy this daily.

Much more testing to do. but right now: Marmite #1 as an ingredient, Vegemite #1 as a spread.

Both are honestly great! I really like the umami/savory profile; mmm mmm MSG!

Big thumbs up! :like:

Mine arrived with the shopping last night, so it was battle of the breakfast spreads this morning ... :giggle:

Kind of similar, but also different ... :like:

I'm guessing they are close enough that if you like one you will probably like the other and if you hate one you will hate them both ?

Vegemite seems a little drier and is a little more difficult to spread, it also needs a bit more to get the same kick.

Defo good, I will use up the jar and then go back to Marmite to see if my opinion changes :like:

Although I haven't had it for years so I've no recent comparison, Vegemite instantly reminded me of Bovril ?

I might do that, but it's defo got it's work cut out to compare with grilled Lea & Perrins on cheese on toast :

Knew you'd see sense :giggle:. It's a delicacy on toast with mild cheddar cheese and/or tomato . Cheese and vegemite sandwiches are a thing here and don't spare the butter.

Spot on, they're definitely first cousins.
