You're right, 5038 does convert to 307. Weird that Ford wouldn't have updated their own spec sheet. I stand corrected.
well the buyers of the Mustang remember the chevy 307 or the olds 307. so that is most likely part of the reason.
hell the fox body 5.0 was a 4.9ltr.

Why do people keep posting this? It is a 302. Attached is the 2019 spec sheet from Ford and if you do the math using the bore and stroke it still works out to a 302.

But, no they should not make another Boss 302, the new Mach 1 really fills the slot that the Boss used to fill. In 69 and 70 the Mach 1 was more of an appearance package then a performance package. Although it may have had stiffer suspension.

I think there should be about a 570 horsepower mustang with a naturally aspirated 5.0 to be between the Mach 1 and gt500

I like math & history;

302 cid = 4.94889 liters

Since manufacturers historically used only one decimal place, they usually rounded up;

4.94889 round up the 8 to 9, which then becomes 4.9489 liters, continue on, 4.949 liters, 4.95 liters, 5.0 liters.

A true 5.0L would be 305.119 cubic inches. <- Chevy nailed it haha.

I love the idea of a Boss 302 - meaning a car with a special higher power and higher winding 302 cubic inch engine designed for road course work. Considering what some other companies are able to do with naturally aspirated engines, it should be entirely possible to make a 302 displacement engine that is head and shoulders beyond the current Coyote.

It would be cool if Ford made a 9,000 RPM 302 engine that was the equivalent of the 500 hp 4.0 flat six Porsche uses - in theory you could get 625 HP out of a 5.0 V8 if you were able to extract the same specific output as that flat six. If Ford could only manage 580 HP I'd still be interested.

Even cooler if they did this in the next generation Mustang and made the car a little smaller and a few hundred pounds lighter than the current Mustang.

500 hp 4.0 flat six Porsche uses
or Porsche 918 Spyder with it's 4.6 liter V8 making 608 horsepower @ 7600 rpm.

Better example than mine for consistency as far as V8 vs. V8. Someone could argue that the 918 was special and few were made, so who knows how well those 4.6 engines last.

However Porsche makes lots of the 4.0s and we know they work well and last.

A N/A 580 hp coyote based engine already exists, the A52 XS aluminator.

If they do make a Boss in the S550 platform it should have what this chassis desperately needs, significant weight reduction. We have power, RPM, IRS, etc; the right elements are present but the 3800+lbs is ridiculous for a performance car. A lightweight Boss (3000-3200 lbs) with at least 500hp would be an amazing street/track performer.

I remember all the hype Boss 302 had when it first premiered. With the GT350, Mach 1, and the PP GTs they would hve to make significant improvements to create a market for it…weight reductions being at the forefront. Im for it as well as the 429 ! They should make the Boss 302 the track weapon and the 429 the drag monster. Released together like the 350 and the 500. Wait ..that bridge has already bn built and crossed. I doubt we will see either anytime soon with the market being revamped by environmental legislations!

There is already one between these two..the GT350/R. Made to be the perfect blend of power and handling!
I honestly miss s197 cause those were straight line cars and I wish ford made more mustangs that were just raw power and muscle
