Recommend me a set of tires

I just got back from the tire store to have my tires rotated and they are at the expiration for tread, need to get a new set, what do you people recommend?

The set that is worn out at 25,000 miles are Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's on a 2016 2.3L Stang which has been lowered and modified a bit. Apparently the Indy 500's had no mileage warranty on them.

I live in Florida were it never gets below 40 and of course no concerns about snow, also rarely drive it in the rain, I am retired, if its bad weather, I go the next day, lol.

I love my Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires, summer tires I believe, soft quiet ride and awesome grip, I have a bit of a leadfoot but with no mileage warranty on them and also their quick tread wear I need something else, please recommend something.

Michelin P4Ss are a popular (but expensive) choice. Continental Extremes are also good and a bit cheaper.

If you want more tread life, you’ll have to move out of the UHP summer category to UHP A/S. You’ll lose some absolute dry grip, but given the relatively narrow tire width I’m not sure you would notice much. Michelin’s A/S 4 is a tremendous tire for that category, so much so that it’s now the OEM C8 tire. Stiff sidewalls though for that category, and there are cheaper options that are 95% as good in the dry.

Otherwise if you still want a UHP summer, try something cheaper like the General G-Max RS. They’re ~$130 on tire rack in that size vs 169 for the Indy 500.

Also, a tire like the PS4S mentioned above will wear similarly to the Indy 500, as it’s a Max performance summer tire (class above UHP summer) so probably not what you want. In general moving up in dry grip means you go down in tread life - and yes that’s not explicitly true with respect to the treadwear numbering system but it’s a reasonable rule of thumb.

somehow a member here got 26,000 miles out of a set of PS4s and it still has enough tread for probably 8000 more. He swears he drives 'hard'.

Supposedly a ultra performance all season 50000 mile warranty tire, we shall see.

A set a four installed for about $740 at Discount Tire, I was told by my previous tire store that the car was pretty nicely out of alignment, because discount tire doesnt do alignments that will be done else where for about $100, what fun, lol.

Always great insights here. I run Nitto NT05’s 275/315 20” on my GT. I am pushing 640whp.
That said, I think they are getting louder and more worn and looking for a replacement, maybe even semi-affordable? ;)

I will probably stick with the UHP category, I don’t need an A/S tire. I just do street driving, no tracks and strictly warm weather.
Input and suggestions? I actually used to run Nitto Info’s on my Audi back in the day and loved them.

Just a couple of short trips on the new tires so far, excellent ride, very grippy, very quiet and being all season should be better in rain than my old Firehawk Indy 500's and of course the new tires have 50K warranty where the old ones had none.

That being said I have noticed that the new Continentals don't seem to have the same razor sharp turning ability of the old Indy 500's, I get that, different kind of tire, however the car stills needs to be aligned (getting that done on tues after memorial day), will the alignment help the turning ability of the new tires or are they just what they are?

add 3psi to help. Contis have very soft sidewalls. Indy have stiff. Put some decent camber on the car when it's going for alignment - at least 1.7 up front.

I ran the older Conti DW06 on the VW and turn-in was great on that car.

Hmm, not sure about these comments on the Continental Extreme Contact DW's, the tires have no handling ability to them at all, car even wallows on them switching lanes.

So switching them out to Continental Extreme Contact Sports, they have 86% more sidewall stiffness than the DW's with only a slight increase in ride stiffness and 20% better tread life and even though they are summer tires still come with a 30000 mile warranty.

I am in Florida, its always summer here and I rarely drive in the rain, a summer tire with performance and decent warranty is exactly what I am looking for (extra $100 for the 4 but feel its worth it), especially to take advantage of my car being lowered and having upgraded sport suspension.

Will be switched out shortly after Memorial Day.

I would never put them on the Mustang since I don't need an all-season tire. The Conti Extreme Contact Sports summer tires had better outperform them by a huge margin.
