That simply is not realistic considering how many departments have and will continue to purchase Ford for their fleets.

Define the Police is a shitty name for a potentially good policy. It should be called Stop Sending the Police on Calls that they are not Trained or Equipped to Handle. Too often police are sent to handle such situations as: animal control (not safe/fair to the officer, or the animal) , mental health issues (because we already Defunded the Public Mental Health System), domestic violence (is an armed response the best way to deescalate?), and vagrancy (see mental health, as a disproportionate number of the homeless were released from public mental health facilities due to lack of funding). Once the burden of these very common calls is lifted, funding can be shifted to programs dedicated to handling these issues.

It's not about disbanding the police, it's about not making them do someone else's job, but rather giving the right person the job in the first place. They could go so far as to integrate some of these service into the departments. Got a potentially dangerous animal on the streets? An Animal Control Officer is sent, someone trained and specialized in safely handling the situation. There's a family living in an abandoned building? Don't chase them away with armed officers, send a department social worker. Society need a centralized system of enforcement, but we need to make major changes to how and when that enforcement is applied.

Depending what news source a person watches totally determines their perspective and political views. Most people only use one source (in the cube) and are totally led by their noses like sheep. Then they go out and repeat what the heard/read with zero discernment on their part. Fools game.

But First Blood would have been super boring if a social worker came to deal with John Rambo :(

Quoting this because it's a fantastic explanation that everyone should use as a response to "Defund the police is bad, M'kay?"

Right on and thank you for clarifying this. There's way too much of a tendency for people to take wild leaps without actually understanding what they're so angry about. In this case, the slogan "defund the police" isn't helping.

The practice of expanding the role of police officers way beyond their training and their core skills (because nobody wants to pay to do this stuff right) has created a generation of officers who are stressed beyond belief, angry, and scared (understandably). It's no wonder that so many of them would act violently or irrationally. It's no wonder that so many of these departments are procuring military grade equipment...this is what they NEED to do the job that we're asking them to do. It's also making them forget who they work for, especially in poor and minority neighborhoods. People lose respect for them, they lose respect for the people they serve. It's a bad, bad, bad trend.

How about "Properly fund the police?" Give them the funding for the equipment they need to do the job of keeping all of us safe and to enforce the law, a solid salary that is justified by their important an dangerous jobs. Nothing more. Just a wild guess...most police officers would prefer it that way.

Always the 1% whose voices get the platform to dictate what the 99% are suppose to feel, do, say.

Well if 1% legitimately worry that one wrong move means that their lives are in real danger, we'd be fools not to listen.
I'm not personally in a group that is statistically more likely to be at risk of police violence but I know, care about, and respect plenty of people who are. It's no joke.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! Just about a perfect explanation of Defund the Police. Although, in domestic violence situations, I think I would want a police officer present. Maybe not one kitted up like a special ops assault team, but for sure a properly trained and armed peace officer.
