I understand why the car is limited but it is still odd. You would most certainly expect the new 500 to have a top speed higher than the last model. Shoot! I could theoretically reach 180 MPH in the R with some streamlining, down hill with a tail wind lol.

I still maintain my point that for 99% of people 180 is enough. Most of us can't push a car to 10/10. For the rest, r u telling me you won't just tune it and take the limiter off? Let's be honest if your pushing a car up to 180 and it's a mustang, your not leaving it stock.

Also I have read in the past how terrible the prior gt500 handled especially at a higher speed. At least now that should not be a concern. Remember folks this ain't no Ferrari. Can't have everything. I'll take beating the others in the 1/4 mile and on a track over a high speed contest. But that's just me.

I could see maybe the base being limited to 180, but the Handling Package ought to have it removed as an option like the M cars do.

Yes! TUNE!!! Ask those 350 owners that have had the warranty denied due to engine failure because of a tune. The tune was not even installed at the time of failure and still Ford saw the tune record and voided his warranty.

That doesn't mean people won't do it. Look at the ecoboost. A lot still tune knowing full well that the ecoboom is a real possibility.

I understand your point, and it is true, but when Ford says this is the most powerful Mustang ever and it goes slower. A lot of people will look puzzled.

Fair enough, I can agree with that.

The best I could ever get at Daytona was 175MPH in a GT350R.
Isn't the top of 5th 175mph in a standard GT350? I thought the R was ~168mph because of the smaller diameter wheels.

I feel like ford being conservative with this car in all the wrong ways. Is anyone really going to go 180mph on street no probably not but all the guys that track these cars will be at the limit. I feel like this car isn’t going to be the end all be all. And it should be

Meh so what, who cares about top speed. The likelihood that your gonna go over 180mph is slim to none. More than enough for 99% of the driving anyone will ever do. I would much rather them invest the money into handling development and refining the car over all then making it suitable for 200mph speeds. Good job Ford for putting he dollars where they needed to go.
I do also but I know I'm in the minority. Being a half mile racer and my colleagues at FoMoCo knowing my goals, they had me order my car in fall of 2017 instead of waiting for the GT500. I'm the kinda guy who had a stock appearance/sounding 2016 SHO daily driver that went 166mph and saw 150+mph weekly though. The GT500 will be a great road course car.

I think another part of this is that cars that are not governed, that is the mystery, the fun of seeing how fast "we" can get it to go. All of the cars I have owned and driven, in Mexico, some were governed, some were not. I have to admit, I have kept all of them under the 160 mark, barely. But the ones that were not governed, they had that unknown about them that makes you want to go for more. Not, I can only go 155 so I am done. Or in this case, 180.
