Flat Rock Prepares For the 2015 Ford Mustang

Ford has begun to ready its Flat Rock Assembly Plant (FRAP) by retooling and adding a second shift of 1,200 workers who will begin building 2015 Mustang prototypes in January, 2014.  The timing is appropriate, as Ford will be idling FRAP later this month due to slow sales of the current Mustang as customers have held off on purchases ahead of the recent 2015 Mustang reveal. Ford will use this downtime to retool the plant and train workers as well as make a host of modifications to the plaint, including its paint shop, in part by cutting a wall to accommodate the wider next-generation Mustang.

Ford is said to be readying the plant for sales of the new Mustang in the Fall of 2014 and all exports to Europe and Asia will be serviced by the Flat Rock Plant. As Ford chief engineer Dave Pericak stated, “everything is contained in one plant, one platform and it’s going to service the world.”
