I just looked at a new trailer and I believe it was 81 inches between the inside fender wells and I believe mine is close to 78 inches in the rear anyone know of solutions to this close fit?

Enclosed car trailers are 102" wide on the outside, making the inside around 96". You were probably looking at a equipment trailer. If the tires and fenders are on outside of the trailer's width then its not going to make a very good car trailer.

TL.DR set the car between the wheel wells and use a winch to pull it in or load more tongue weight to keep the rear wheels from coming up to the wheel wells.

96” inside then subtract wheel wells. Mine fits between the wheel wells but only has a few inches on either side. A GT has a 75.4” width but the car is on 19x11 square with 305s and 1” spacer up front so it should be a little wider. Not sure what the exact track width of the car is but I drive it in and haven’t hit the wheel wells (yet). Another option is a winch so you can set it between the wheel wells and then pull it in.

My rear wheels just barely pass the wheel wells bc I don’t have weight in the front of the trailer so the car needs to be further forward for tongue weight. If you will load the front (extra wheels, tools, etc) then the the car can be further back so the rear may not pass the wheel wells.

I never thought to take closer pics of the car width:wheel wells but can next week when it gets loaded up again. It’s not a good angle but you can kind of see the space between the car and wheel wells in these pics.

This is what I use. It’s an ATC, the flip up side and detachable fender assembly for loading is really convenient.

The trailer manager said he recommends a winch but doesn’t have an idea of pricing? 2000-3500? His guess ; this is the one I like for 15700, 22ft all Aluminum but does not have an escape door on the left side

Opinions ( room to tires permitting) on me cutting the inside facing Diamond plate off of the inner fenders . about 1 1/2 inches back and add a one piece plexiglass to the left over opening as plexiglass would provide a sliding surface ? Just how to attach the plexiglass to the remaining edge of the aluminum diamond plate?

That would fix the width problem plus I could Open the car door and actually get out of it without squeezing out like a NASCAR 135 pound flexible 22-year-old. I’m 70 and 200lbs and that won’t be pretty. The trailer guru here mentioned getting the 22ft . Moving it all The way forward and then opening the doors past those inside fender wells .and getting out and then pushing it back and tying it down??

The flip up door does make for convenience, unfortunately it comes with a bump in price on the trailer. It would be very tight trying to get out of the car even pulled forward. A winch and not being in the car while loading would be much easier. Not sure age has a lot to do with that. Lol. My trailer requires ramp extensions for my R and it has a very low angle for the ramp. Mine is a 24’, and the extra length was worth it for me.

@Inthehighdesert Did you buy your ATC new? I have been looking on racejunk for either an ATC, R&R or Intech as I want the all aluminum construction but don't want to spend the new prices :)

I was actually thinking of starting a thread to ask folks opinion on best time of year to shop for used quality enclosed trailers and where to look besides racejunk and local ads.

You're not going to find a standard car trailer with much more than about 82in clearance between fenders. My car is similarly wide and you just have to be careful. 81in is slightly on the narrow side but it will fit.

The escape door is a nice convenience if you're not winching the car in. Before I got the winch, I just needed a buddy to help guide me in. With the winch it's a 1-man job.

I did buy mine new. I looked for used, found zero. I’m sure you know they just don’t come up used very often and when they do they almost bring new money. I was about to order. Salesman called and said this presold order that just arrived the gentleman backed out. It just happened to be exactly what I was going to order. That dealer was 5-6k less then any dealer I could find and the wait was 8-9 months. That was in Jan. If you want to know price just pm me. No regrets, by far the nicest trailer I’ve ever purchased. R&R and Intech are in the same category of trailers.

Wait a second. Are you trying to say there are 135# Cup drivers?

Love my ATC Quest. 24 ft. The escape door is fantastic.

One word of caution to ATC owners, I have had trailer tires peel on the side with the escape door. The first time it knocked the removable fender up nearly vertical. Did a couple thousand $$ in damage to my concours 1970 Boss. I am pretty OCD about trailer tires. Monitoring pressure, keeping mph at 65, replacing every 2 years, etc. Have only had 2 flats in 25 years (across multiple trailers).

After the incident described above, I put tie downs at each end of the removable fender, on the floor, and now use a 1 inch ratchet strap down the length of the fender to keep it in place.

Peeled another tire about 3 weeks ago. WTF! However, with the strap, the fender stayed in place. Cheap insurance.

Do it now, before you regret it. Replacing the OEM cheapo Chinese tires that trailer manufacturers install is also worth the investment. (I am now running Goodyear Endurance).

I had the same thing happen with my toyhauler. Ripped up the fender, underside, and tore the auto level jack off. The tires that the manufacturers put on are pretty much done by 24 regardless of miles. The tie downs is a good tip, I did similar. My only complaint with my ATC Quest is the tires, but I fully expected that. Trailer is amazing otherwise.
