Here's a new one. At a far distance this 2018 Mustang mule appeared to be sporting a shaker hood reminiscent of the Mach 1, but as it approached we are able to see that it was a strange bump mocked up on top of the hood.

The first 2018 Mustang prototypes were spied last week with full body camouflage suggesting styling changes for both the front and rear end of the vehicle.

Since we're not expecting any major engine additions for the 2018+ Mustang GT with the exception of the 5.0-liter potentially receiving a combination of port fuel injection with direct injection and modest power bump, the fabricated bump attached to this S550 mule's hood just adds to the intrigue.

Whether the fabricated bump attached to the hood suggests other engine tweaks in store for the S550 Mustang or an indication that something is being worked on for a possible 2018 Mach 1, remains to be seen.

The mule also shows substituted front headlights in place of the current production headlights with the signature tri-bar "shark gill" daytime running lights.

With the perpetual cat and mouse game and Ford's continual improvements in camouflage and automotive disguise this could just be a sly stunt on the part of the automaker. We'll find out soon enough.

I don't think these are the production headlights for the '18. If they went out to the wild with hardly any cameo is because they are testing the powertrain or some sort of software. If these were the production headlights we probably would have seen a modified bumper or taillights. Or if they are the production headlights, they're probably for the V6 version. Remember that the '15-16 V6 had wheel options. Now the '17 doesn't have any wheel options. Maybe the '18 V6 will no longer have the trip-bar gills and maybe even HIDs.

There's no way they'll go backwards with features. Like BmacL said, it's an old body being used to test powertrain stuff. The tail lights in the back are also missing trim. This is just a crude patchwork of spare parts to make a road legal car. Production bodywork will be camouflaged like the pictures from last month and today's convertible pictures show.

As BmacIL said on the other thread, most likely an old '15 mule with '18 running gear.

As for the hood appendage.........I think Ford are playing games with us :headbonk:

Yup...absolutely a drivetrain mule...there's an odd mishmash of parts.
