The Class of 2016:

3.0L Turbocharged DOHC I-6 (BMW 340i)
3.6L DOHC V-6 (Chevrolet Camaro/Cadillac ATS)
1.5L DOHC 4-cyl./120-kW Drive Motor (Chevrolet Volt EREV)
5.2L DOHC V-8 (Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang)
2.0L DOHC 4-cyl./50-kW Drive Motor (Hyundai Sonata PHEV)
3.5L DOHC V-6 (Nissan Maxima)
3.0L Turbodiesel DOHC V-6 (Ram 1500 EcoDiesel)
2.0L Turbocharged DOHC 4-cyl. Boxer (Subaru WRX)
1.8L DOHC 4-cyl./53-kW Drive Motor (Toyota Prius HEV)
2.0L Turbo/Supercharged DOHC 4-cyl. (Volvo XC90)

Ford has no trouble muscling its way onto this year’s list with a 526-hp naturally aspirated 5.2L bruiser of a V-8 in the new Shelby GT350 Mustang.

With its heralded flat-plane crankshaft and weight-reducing Plasma Transfer Wire Arc cylinder coating, Ford’s “Voodoo” V-8 casts a spell on WardsAuto editors by demonstrating that a redline of 8,250 rpm is not something to fear but embrace.

Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang with 5.2L V-8.
Derived from the 5.0L “Coyote” V-8 that won Wards 10 Best Engines trophies in 2011 and 2012, the 5.2L, with old-school port fuel injection, 6-speed manual transmission and using premium fuel, reaches the 100 hp/L threshold, which is extremely difficult for a big engine without forced induction.

Truly suited for hammering around the track, the GT350’s engine is described as “positively demonic” by a Mustang loyalist intoxicated by the brash exhaust note and subtle but soothing shimmy at idle.

The Voodoo engine does everything well, from puttering around town to frightening small animals. WardsAuto editors consider it the pinnacle of internal-combustion engineering.

Makes sense that the DOHC V6 from Chevy makes the list but the pushrod V8s do not.

I think they only do new engines. The LT1 has been around since 2014

Been blowing up for years now, I guess. Did you see that EVERY engine on the list is DOHC?

Huh, I never pay attention to fuel economy and I don't care.

I have a coworker with a suburban. He says cylinder deactivation is the worst invention ever. I would avoid it less for NVH and more because I don't want glazed cylinder walls.

"WardsAuto editors consider it the pinnacle of internal-combustion engineering."

When details started coming out about the Voodoo, I was making a similar statement as above. A new video would come up from Ford Performance outlining the tech and such, I would share that video on my facebook page and say "Pinnacle of American automotive engineering", been doing it for about 6 months now. Of course, I like to throw jabs in there as well about the 7.0L LS7 ;) Would get my GM buddies wound up higher than the Voodoo's redline.

Drop that 120 KW electric in the 17 Camaro and you have a back to back Motor Trend winner!

Don't forget, mpg is also affected by vehicle weight, aero/drag, gear ratios, etc...many ways to achieve good mileage that have nothing to do with an engine.

I can vouch for the DOHC V6 in the '16 ATS. Absolutely magnificent, pulls hard all the way through to 7 grand.
