Took the time today while changing the oil and replaced the cabin air filter. Unfortunately it is one of those jobs you do laying upside down in the passenger foot well.

Less than a year and the filter was filthy.

From the foot well looking up behind the glove box, remove the screw with a T-15 Torx bit.

(Owner's Manual list the wrong part number as FP-53. The correct part is FP-78)

Open the panel being careful not to break the two tabs that secure it into place.

Remove the old Cabin Air Filter and discard.

Gently angle the new filter into place.

Replace the Cabin Air Filter door. Make sure to secure both tabs in their proper location.

Replace Torx screw and tighten.

Good info. Cheapest place I see for the filter is RockAuto.com at $11.72. Everywhere else is well over $20 each.

The owner's manual does not distinguish particular models that would have the cabin filter so I would believe it is across the line.

Adding a little spritz of cologne or air freshener to that filter makes the car smell nice for a while vs using a regular freshener ;)

Thanks for the write-up and info. I wonder what the recommended change interval is for this cabin filter?

My car is almost a year old. Guess I will buy one and replace it.

Great write-up! I can't believe the filter was that dirty after a year. I usually don't replace the cabin air filter until 2-3 years.

I thought I read somewhere that the interval for the cabin air filter replacement was 20,000 miles.

My parents live off of a dirt road and I do see them at least once a week. Your filter may not look as bad, but I was amazed when I saw mine. I'll move the frequency of changes up to 10,000 miles from here on out.

Ahhhhh, good info. I'll post pictures of mine sometime this week for comparison as my car only has 7k miles.

Confirmed. Page 419 of the owner's manual reads 20,000 miles.

One thing to note though. In the Owner's manual (page 268) it calls for FP-53 as the correct replacement. That is contradicting the Ford parts website that call for FP-78, which was an exact match for what I used.

Hope this helps.

Interesting to see that Fram doesn't make one for the Mustang yet. I put a Fram charcoal activated in my wife's Pilot and it made a big difference on killing odors in the car.

Took mine out today and after 1 year it was black. However, my house has been under major renovations for the past 10 months and he have a dirt driveway. Now that construction is done and lane will be paved in the next week or so, thought I would swap it.

Only thing is that when I removed the old one I did not notice the air flow direction. Can anyone tell me the direction of the air flow based on the photos above?

Should the airflow arrow point towards the T20 screw or away?

Thanks

If I'm not mistaken, airflow goes toward the driver side.

Everyone else is mentioning a T-20 Torx bit. I went back and checked mine and my T-15 Torx bit fits it.
