The 2015 Mustang GT is a stellar performer right out of the box. Hell, there was a vocal faction that argued it should have won our 2015 Performance Car of the Year competition. Not bad for a pony car you can get into for under $35,000.
But 435 horsepower from the stock 5.0-liter just ain't enough for some people.
It certainly isn't enough for John Hennessey, the man behind Hennessey Performance, a company that seems to be completely uninterested in any car making less than 700 horsepower.
So, with the addition of a 2.9-liter supercharger, upgraded fuel injectors, custom engine calibration, and the all-important embroidered floormats and headrests, Hennessey turned the Mustang's 435 ponies into 717 screamin', snortin' stallions. Not to mention, 632 lb.-ft. of torque, a unit which neither screams nor snorts as it buries the back of your cranium in those headrests.
Hennessey says the Mustang GT HPE700 kit is good for 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, on the way to an 11.2-second quarter-mile at 131 mph. He also hoped the mods would push the pony to the vaunted 200 mph mark.
He didn't quite make it, but no matter: Hennessey's personal HPE700 Mustang ripped its way to a GPS-verified 195.2 mph at the dusty, uneven-looking Continental Tires Proving Grounds in Uvalde, Texas—breathing through the factory stock exhaust, no less.
