My GF hit a low wall at night while backing up slowly. Unfortunately, the rear bumper cover has 4-5 scratches over 1" (the one at the bottom curve is deeper) The bumper slightly moved on the right side (2mm)

The body shop estimated the repairs at $850 (7h labor, 5h paint @55).

Is the price reasonable? Is it something that could be fixed by myself (I detail and wax my car, no painting experience)? I will try to get another estimate, not sure if I should claim it (500$ deductible)

Thanks!

A labor rate of $55/hour is extremely low. Check with your insurance company but since no other car was involved it may be worth making the claim.

That's a tough one. It absolutely won't polish out, and if you do touch-up it will be very noticeable because of the compound curves and metallic paint. You're basically stuck living with it or repainting, sorry man.

Shoot, you can almost buy a pre-painted rear cover for that much if you shop around a bit.

the shop charged me $55 dollars to re-adjust my bumper when I got rear ended... For the paint part. I'm not sure how much though...

My car was hit in the rear bumper on a parking lot. The estimate was $850 , I'd say that's right, and you should have them do it.

Search on eBay and buy another rear bumper cover in same color for far less than $850. There's many threads on here showing the R&R process - probably can replace in under 2hrs.

Don't claim it on insurance - they will find any way to jack your rates up.

How do you hit a wall behind you? With the nanny rear detectors blaring away?

I got a couple more estimates that are more reasonable: $350, $400 and $530. I will pick the one that I would trust the most.

While looking around, I realized that the first quote was from a shop that is owned by a dealership. It may not be their primary business (or just processing a lot of insurance claims) which may explain the higher price.

Thanks for the answers.

I just have the rear view camera (no sensors), my gf isn't used to look at it. She just looked behind, and hit a wall that was 1-2 feet tall :/

We agreed that our next cars will have proximity sensors :)
