Hey all,

I recently checked my oil for the first time since 500 miles (now at 2700), and noticed my oil level was missing quite a bit of oil. I filled a quart in and its still reading slightly under the min hole on the dipstick. Is that much oil consumption normal during a break in period? Seems like a lot to me, but this is my first new car. I have taken the oil readings with a cold engine every time.

Thanks!

That seems excessive.

I believe this is normal, I had close to a quart disappear in the first few thousand miles as well. The car has not burned any oil after the first oil change.

Oil usage

My EB took about 1/2 quart during first 1,000 miles. Then no visible drop on the dipstick during the next 4,000 miles.

I was lucky. Mine doesn't consume any in 5,000 miles, but its common for some to use a bit in the first 10,000 then taper off.

I put a catch can on mine at 26 miles. Before my first oil change at 2000mi it was completely full. Seems to be the norm on these engines. Have 20k mi on it now and theres barely a teaspoon of oil in at at regular oil change intervals

No catch can installed and I used around a quart in ~3200 miles.

Did you check it when you bought or are now just checking it and seeing it's low? If you didn't previously check I wouldn't assumed Ford filled it properly and just monitor it from this point forward.
I have a JLT catch can on mine, engine brake all the time (6sp) and I'm putting oil in it when I check it about once per month.

For the first 10,000 miles Ford allows something like 1 quart of oil per 1-3000 miles, I can't remember.

I ended up adding a total of 3-4 quarts before the first oil change, now the car burns maybe a quart per 10,000.

13k miles total now
