I just saw the thread regarding the alcantara covered center console with cup elimination, and one of the posters runs a police scanner. I just downloaded the 5-0 Police Scanner app and was playing around with it, and am trying to determine it's value.

Do others on this forum use a police scanner?

Here is my gameplan:
Escort Max2 tied into Escort Live for an additional layer or support.
Waze to monitor reported hotspots.
(For my Yamaha FJR1300 I run my iphone in conjunction with the Escort Max2 mixed with a "Mix-it", which gives priority to a warning from the Escort and mutes the iPhone)

Thinking of adding the police scanner app to my gameplan...

Other than common sense and restraint what strategy do you employ to maintain your DL privileges?
(no moralizing needed, just your smart safe practices)

Scanner not very helpful in my area, does not have the correct feeds that would cover routine types of calls.

I run a radar detector. However the 10+ times I obviously avoided getting a ticket was common sense and restraint at times when I wanted to punch it. I also do my best to check all around me before I do anything, although sometimes thats not possible with the rear view mirror trying to shake itself off the windshield.

I'm glad mine isn't the only one that has a shaky rear view

Sorry guys, don't have a GT350 (although want one badly) but do have an EB I just got as my commuter car. I has a Passport 9500ix, and use Waze in conjuntion with common sense (not always turned on though - the common sesnse that is). Seems to get me by.

Do a ride-along with a cop and you will quickly realize that all those expensive electronic gizmos provide pretty much nothing more than a placebo effect.

Somewhat ( I say this with many years experience of riding with LEOs ).

1. Radar detectors work when you have traffic in front of you. Otherwise almost every cop uses instant on radar.

2. If you get a laser warning you are most likely screwed as they already have you.

3. Laser jammers work, but if you get caught with them be prepared to pay a price.

4. The 5-0 app won't really do anything for you except to hear your license plate get called in to dispatch before you are pulled over.

5. Waze (coupled with a good detector) is the best bet, but not always current and not really safe to look at and constantly update while you are driving.

6. Your other best bet is common sense and just do track days to get it out of your system.

2. Right on true.
3. Not true. Currently regulated by the FDA, not the FCC, laser jammers are NOT illegal. Your locality or state may have other laws. However, if they say it is a tool to circumvent the law, they may come at you that way.
6. Best alternative.

Not moralizing here, but playing on the street just leads to very ugly stories. I was nearly part of one some years ago and it cured me. I joined a track club to get my jollies in a safe manner. The problem is cars are getting faster every year and their capability levels are so high now. I also use radar detectors, but as has been said above: common sense prevails (and be VERY observant of your surroundings).

Good luck. :headbang:

You're right, I should've said depends on the laser jammers. They are illegal in MN and a lot of other states.

Edit: Here is a good article about laser jammers.

I've had good luck with my Radenso XP and Waze + common sense. As previously mentioned, I think this is all contextual on how we all define "hooning" and having a bit of fun.

For me, that means having a bit of fun on super long straights without other cars, a more time efficient cruising speed or some back road twisties.

Edit: Forgot to include tunnel and "cool car dude" revs
