Here's the reply from Ford Australia Service

Hi, as you know the IOLM (Intelligent Oil Life Monitor) uses various factors to determine when an oil change is required and this is calculated by the PCM. A signal is sent to the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and a message is displayed in the message centre.
The oil change interval will be reduced due to: low or high engine temperature, high engine rpm, the use of flex fuel and possibly due to a low oil level. If the IOLM is coming *on* prematurely and the vehicle is only being driven for street use, it sounds like the Dealers actions would be acceptable (ie. check engine oil level, reset and return the car to the owner). If the vehicle returns to a Dealership with the same IOLM message, the Dealership would need to check the oil level to ensure it is correct; change the oil and reset the IOLM. The Dealership would need to determine how the vehicles are being driven and what the time line is between the last IOLM reset (remembering if it wasn’t done at pre- delivery the date of build may need to be taken into account). Hope this helps and we wish you a Merry Christmas from the Facebook Team and to the Mustang 6G members FordService^JS

Cool, thanks. I picked some up yesterday from SuperCheap. Wasn't cheap though, $65 for 6L so I had to buy 2!!

Got a filter from Ford spare parts, so her first oil change will be happening soon. I considered taking it to Ford to do it, but have decided to tackle it myself.

The oil filter is apparently in a real shitty spot and changing the filter is a real bitch to do as well as messy. Let us know how you go.

Yes, $12.22. Not expensive, I expected double that. They tried to sell me oil as well for about $28 for 4L, but it was dinosaur and I wanted fully synthetic

You are correct - the oil filter is in a REAL shitty spot. I put the car up on stands, and had to contort my arms and hands to get my hands onto it. I had to move aside another plastic shield (apart from the 'access' one underneath the filter), and after what felt like 30 mins I finally got the old filter off and the new one on. I also got a free splash in the eye from a couple of drops of warm oil (thank god it wasn't hot!!), and some slightly charred fingers. If you decide to do it yourself, make sure you put on at least gloves, and consider eye protection too :)

Putting the new one on was also a challenge because its a little longer than the original.

However, job done and never again. I may just change my oil every 6 months, and let Ford do the 12 month change of filter and oil from now on.

Suprisingly, the mess wasn't too bad, I put an old doona on the ground under the tray and only got a couple of dots of oil on the driveway.

Had my light come on at 3,800km, so I took it in and was charged $240. Given the other prices listed here I did pretty well.

What does concern me is that they put in FPV 5.0 - 5W-20 (Supercharged). The common consensus here is 5W-30.

I know we're coming up to winter but I don't drive it much so this oil will be in there for at least another year. They have a guy that services the Mustang specifically during the week so I would be surprised if this is an error; nonetheless 5W-30 is the most commonly cited. Not sure if I should be concerned?

I Don't know if it is a problem or not as they use 5w-20 in USA. However the owners manual for Aus. specifies very clearly 5w-30! Lots of warm climate USA owners use 5w-30 as well as track day drivers over there. I left the last dealer that was servicing my previous car for this very reason ! as they rather argue the point than use the correct grade of oil. I had the mustang in for it's first inspection a couple of days ago and the dealers service department informed me they use 5w-20 !!! When I told them that was wrong they at least responded they would check and get back to me! Fantastic that "Mustang Specialists" can't get that right!

Updated Oil list

Castrol Magnatecpro 5a 5w30
Havoline FS 5W-30
Valvolene synthetic FE 5W3
Penrite Full Synthetic 5w 30

If you know of any oils that would suite the mustang please update this list.

The above I know is for the GT not sure of Ecoboost.

I had my oil/filter done at the 3000klm service on friday.

Have a couple of OEM filters that I had thrown in with my last CJ's order if anybody is after one.

Cheers

I've just had this oil change warning come up again.

Less than 7500km on the clock and only a few months since I had the first oil change.

Ford sticker on my windshield recommending 15000km or December this year for the next trip to the dealer.

I'll just be resetting it on this occasion.
