I wonder if you have to have the dealer install it for them to retain the warranty. I'd love to piece together all the parts, but I don't think they'd warranty anything if something broke.

Not the dealer just an ASE certified mechanic if I remember correctly. There is documentation on some of the sellers sites and at Ford.
