All good points, but I feel the M2's ride is between the standard and sport in the GT350. If you feel it's fine, the M2 will be fine as well.

I would agree about the price difference then for you, the BMW is $20000 more? Then definitely GT350. IF it's $20000 less, I'd take the M2 and some mods but preserve the warranty.

I wouldn't put much merit into the power difference between the two unless you're interested in higher speed driving. The gearing of the M2 is a LOT shorter. Dramatically shorter. The 350 will gap it from a 50 roll but will not pull on it until then as long as the M2 hooks, and that's being heavily undertired in comparison.
I disagree about where the ride is. It is tough for me to state the difference between the suspensions as they react very differently while driving. The mag ride is so much better at dealing with bumps and other road issues than the current BMW suspensions it is hard to compare the two.

One of my favorite Jalopnik articles (before anyone gets offended, I'm sure a similar article could be written about Ford engines):
http://thegarage.jalopnik.com/bmw-engines-are-gigantic-pieces-of-shit-1784684330
Well, while there is some truth behind the rant in the article, I do not think the author ever had objectivity as a goal though :)

I have owned many of the cars mentioned there (still do an N20 powered X1 and S54 powered M coupe) and nothing close to the doomsday scenarios described here happened. Yes, BMWs are not the most reliable cars out there but they used to make up by the driving experience they offered - not any longer unfortunately with the exception of the M2...

For me, like others, it was between the 2 more or less. I had the opportunity to pull the trigger on the M2 for 9 months but something held me back. Coming from an 05 ZHP daily driver the M2 seemed like an updated, modernized version of that car, which is a great compliment but nothing totally new I guess. After I drove my first GT350 it was game over for the M2. Surprisingly to me at that time the Ford delivered that little something I cannot define in spades. And then I had to have one :D

Probably has to do with the steering being not that overly aggressive in its setup in terms of turns lock to lock. Going into a corner the wheel can be turned so much more than your brain thinks is right or possible haha insane amounts of grip on the front end, you just have to turn the steering wheel so much you think you're going to abuse the poor tires but they just take it and go.

MY17 GT350 starts at 75K up here, with the electronics or convenience it is $80,500 including delivery plus tax. M2 on the other hand is $65,000 for the 6 speed, $68,000 for the DCT. I don't know if they bumped the price up for MY17, but I thought for sure it had a 56-57K base price when it came out, though I might have just been mistaken.

Considering once you add some options to it you are at GT350 price, it is a no brainer to me. Actually, at 75-80K, that would get you into a new 2LT Z51 Corvette which has just as high build quality as the BMW, but far more performance.

I know the gearing is shorter, and that will definitely help improve the feel of the power, but it is still a 3500lb car with less than 400hp. The 0-60 times mean absolutely nothing to me, as they are merely a measure of how great the launch control system is in a car these days and how much traction a car has. I tend to look at the 60-100mph times, as this is a range of speed that I am in quite frequently when running through 2nd and 3rd, and the 350 is at 4.8 vs 6.2. And don't forget, that M2 is a DCT which essentially reduces time lost between shifts to nothing. Figure a 6.5 run for the manual M2 if not higher as the gearing is higher in the manual as well. Might not seem like a lot on paper, but my CLA45 was a car that did 0-60 in 4.2 and 1/4 in 12.8 @ 110 as well, with a 3rd gear that redlined at less than 80mph.... and the difference in acceleration is not even close.

Been shopping for a daily. Just quick comparison of hp to curb weight ratio yielded the following. So much more goes into the selection but had to start somewhere. Interesting stats though:

ATS-V 8.16
RS3 8.98
M2 9.6

RS5 9.0
M3 8.17
GT350 7.32 (3850lbs)

For a fun daily the ATS-V seems compelling but the new Audi RS3 is going to be a rocket with a tune and AWD.

That M2 is one sorry , unappealing looking car. Bravo for BMW though, they must have some great salesmen. Nothing sporty-looking about this car at all.

350 vs M2
[ame]

I enjoyed watching that. I could almost predict which car the tester would choose based on his emotional reaction while driving each car.

I've owned 5 BMWs in the past, including an E36 M3 and E46 M3 - which was my last BMW. Since then, only the new M2 has been close to making me return. But the lust factor of the GT350 was just too strong for me vs the M2.

From those specific three.... the M2 would be the sure 3rd on my list. But I'd rule it out anyway since the GT350 or a used 991.1 would be the top two better choices, IMO. Prices aside, maybe even just flip a coin between these top two.

1) GT350 (whether '17-'18 or a pre-owned Track Pack)
2) And a close second really... the 991.1 coupe
3) M2
Had I not owned a Porsche 997 C2S, I probably would have ranked the 991.1 higher. My 997 is a much loved car, that I've owned for over 8 years. The GT350 renders it obsolete, but I continue to hold onto the 997 for sentimental reasons.

The 991 never called to me in the same way as the 997 did when it first came out. Before buying the GT350, I test drove a 991.1 7 spd manual as a sanity check, as I still love Porsche. But it just wasn't enough to make me part with my 997 or stop me from adding the GT350. OTOH, I still find the M2 intriguing and desirable, but would never part with my GT350 for one.

I had possession of a 997 C4S ('07) a while back (long story, but car belonged to a friend who needed cash). I only kept it for about 5 months but recall telling my wife that I now realize why people are willing to spend $100K+ for a new 911. Hard to describe if you have not driven one. The integration of the parts and the seamless nature of the drivetrain is simply on another level.....and then reality hit when the "20K Service Due" displayed on the screen and the TPMS light came on.....$1,600 later I decided 911 ownership was above my pay scale.....

I've driven the M2, and it's a great car.. However, the GT350/350R just has more soul.

I love the GT350 and I wouldn't ever trade it for an M2 but this is an absolutely ridiculous statement. It's a good and surprisingly engaging car.

That Jalopnik article...S85. How can something so wonderful that produced such an incredible noise and power band be such a HORRIBLE worthless pile of smashed assholes? I just don't get it. Oh that's right...VANOS. And bearings.

^This, it may look like I'm bashing the M2 and even the M3/4, but I actually think they are great cars. You can tell BMW has held back in some very important areas though and prevented them from being really fantastic cars IMO. Which, is really frustrating to me and a lot of people from the reviews and the amount of people I've seen switch to the GT350 from current M cars (me included).

Honestly if the M3/4 had a suspension system like our GT350s and a MDM (TC) mode that wasn't complete shit, I probably wouldn't of switched. It's hard to say, but I really don't know what I would've done.
