Hey guys, looking for opinion on anyone that has felt a manual GT with 3.55 gears compared to 3.31. Ever since I ordered my my car I wished I would of got the 3.55 option, just to feel little more neck jerk at low rpm's. Is it worth the upgrade or would I not notice it too much?
Anyone know what it costs to switch gears on the S550?
Thanks

I've had 2.73s (sad), 3.27s, 3.73s (current), and 4.10s in the many Mustangs I've owned over the years.

My opinion is: if you switch the gears go more aggressive so it's really worth the time and money. 3.73s work very well with this high-revving (relatively speaking) engine; 3.90s or 4.10s would be fun too if you're the drag racing type and don't live on the highway for a commute.

As far as cost, I recall around the $500 mark for install + the parts. You'll have to find a way to recallibrate your speedometer as well.

Thanks Roadway.
3.73 is too much imo for a daily driver, that's why I was wondering about 3.55. maybe the difference isn't worth the $500 and chance of problems when opening up factory seal

IMO in order to feel any real difference you must go up or down 2 steps in ratio. IE 3.73 to 3.31 there is about a 200 rpm difference between gear ratio's.

I got the 3.55's because they happened to be on the car. Since I drive 129 miles to work, would have rather had 3.31's. That said, the 3.55's feel pretty good, like they belong there.

Drove both when i got mine. I do mostly highway driving so 3.31 was ideal. The 3.55 felt energetic and i liked it. Still wonder about it.

MT82 has 3.66 1st gear

400 lb ft * 3.66 * 3.31 = 4855

3.31 -> 3.55 ~ 7% torque gains
3.31 -> 3.73 ~ 12%
3.31 -> 4.1 ~ 24%

Just for fun,
Tremec Magnum XL, rated at 700 lb ft
Choice of two different gear ratio sets (2.66 or 2.97)

400 * 2.97 * 4.1 = 4870 ~ MT82 /w 3.31 gears

My car is MT82 and 3.55, on 235 A/S tires. 1st gear can light up the T/C fairly easily. At least on asphalt.

I have 3.55s and first gear just seems to short. I wish I would have gone 3.31s. I would hate 3.73s.

Mine came with the 3.55 option from the factory. I really like them. I think its a perfect blend between 3.31 and 3.73. Not too short and not too long.

Though from what I read, if you ever get a supercharger 3.73 would be a waste of 1st gear with all that wheel spin. I see that youre in Chicago. So am I!

3.55 Chicago brotherhood!...Okay I'm near Chicago not quite IN.

Anyway I looked specifically for 3.55 gears, and I'm glad I got them. I drove my friend's 3.31 GT and wasn't a fan of the acceleration. Even he thought my car was snappier than his.

I know 3.55s aren't much different than 3.31s on paper, but I think there's enough difference to justify getting one over the other. I've also driven a PP with 3.73s and it reminded me of my old car, having to row through the gears way too fast and way too often. Though they do make the car feel a lot faster, the constant shifting kind of bothered me.

All in all my vote goes to 3.55s if you want a good balance between daily driving and spirited driving.

Those that upgraded their gears, do you guys get a loaded dif or just buy the gear and have a shop swap them?

Also, going from a roll, how much difference does the 3.55 make vs 3.31?
