There are various threads of me recommending the 170* unit with solid results as far as temps go. No more 215* temps. No track times as of yet but I have no issues gapping Challenger R/Ts in Mexico. To address your last point, I am properly tuned and datalogged for the Reische 170* since day one of owning it from Torrie. This mod is a staple mod and has been for a long time if you browse the 5.0 and Ecoboost sections. It works just as good for the 3.7. Temps are around 185*-187* even on a hot sweltering day. The lower CHTs allow more timing.

170* is the perfect balance. 160* is too "cold" and most of the 160* brands are not as high quality as Reische. There also reports of the 160* units not even running within the advertised temp range. The Reische unit is built as sturdy as the stock Ford unit. A good read for those on the fence: http://reischeperformance.com/WhyLowTemp.html

Car runs at 178-183 head temp, so long as im not stopped for long. Car seems to like it, and no mpg hit

Will using the 170 t-stat put more strain on the cooling system?
How was the install? Did you guys drain the coolant or is it ok to just hot swap and add coolant as needed? How do you burp for air once you install everything?

Car is self burping. I did mine when it was cold, i just quickly did it while it drained lol. Didnt even loose that much fluid. Dont even unhook the hose, just undo the housing, amd quickly swap out lol. Redill your overflow to the full line, after some driving, check the level. No, why would it cause extra strain..tge coolant going into the radiator is 20 deg cooler, the motkr is 20 deg cooler, the water pump stays cooler...its a win win.

No, but it won't do anything to prevent overheating either. Above 215*F, the OEM thermostat and a 170* thermostat are both open.

All a 170* t-stat does is make your car run cooler until there's enough heat/load in the engine to raise the engine temps to 215*F -in which case there is no difference from stock.

Thus, I don't understand the point.

why do you think that under normal driving conditions an engine with a 170 will see temperatures of 215?
I have a couple of 1960's cars that have 160 thermostats for decades. The highest readings I see are 180.

Where did I say that it will?

What's wrong with the engine operating with it's factory T-stat? The car doesn't overheat. If it does overheat from heavy track use on a hot day, the OEM thermostat will be 100% open, and so will a 170* thermostat, so the lower stat won't improve the cooling ability of your system. It will just make it run cooler on the street which is unnecessary. It's a pointless mod.

your post #10 indicated with a 170 the engine will see temperatures of 215 just like with the stock thermostat.
Has anybody with a 170 seen temperatures of 215 and if so under what conditions?

You missed the:

"until there's enough heat/load in the engine to raise the engine temps to 215*F"

-which can easily happen on track.

How's the install? Do I need to drain all the coolant?
