Did the right rear on mine yesterday. It was significantly tighter than the LR.

So I had a chance to pull the driver side rear wheel this morning on my GT, since that seems to be the most problematic side. This particular car only has just under 1900 miles on it, and the spindle nut did not budge with my torque wrench set at 150 ftlbs.

On my car, the stock nut has cutouts for a cotter pin. I added some red locktite at all of the cutout points, though I have no idea if that will really do anything, since locktite is designed to be spread into the threads when installing the nut onto the bolt. I did not want to loosen the stock nut to properly install the locktite, because that essentially would have rendered the existing nut unusable, as they are a one-time use piece. I still have to check the passenger side nut, but will do that when I can pull the car out of the garage.

I picked up 2 new nuts today to have on hand, just in case. Part number CCPZ-3B477-F, which do not have cotter pin cutouts, and appear to be Ford's silver grade 10.9 one-time use hardware.

That's correct, CCPZ-3B477-F replaces nut CV6Z-3B477-A.

So the new one doesn't have the cut outs.

FWIW this is used on a lot of Ford and Lincoln hubs

I'd like to add that you may want to also check your wheel bearing while there.

While upgrading my suspension I noticed as well that my driver's rear wheel bearing was toast after 500 miles!! :eyebulge::shrug:

I checked my wheel bearings all fine, I replaced the nut on the creaking wheel with CCPZ-3B477-F. The new one had some green stuff on the inside on the threads, maybe thread locker or anti seize?

I don't think the old one had any

The bad wheel bearings could be a victim of the hub nut coming loose. Running a wheel bearing with too little preload can be as bad as running one with too much pre load.

^ This.

I have had this theory for a while now, that I truly believe that the bearings failing so often could be based on the clamping load of the nuts decreasing.

This is why I basically ignore any TQ specs or procedures....and go straight to 150ftlbs + 1/8 turn with Red Loctite.

I had a friend with a car that had 1900 miles on it. We were swapping his wheels out a while back and for shits and giggles, I decided to check his TQ on his OEM never touched retaining nuts.

The passenger side came out to about 115ftlbs and the driver side, took half a turn to get to 100ftlbs. lol

I know because of experience....you know the indestructable 9" Ford rear end??? Well I destroyed one because of not enough preload on the pinion bearings, and running 37" Super Swampers. Pinion was thrusting under load and ate up a set of Richmond 4.56 gears.

The bad wheel bearings could be a victim of the hub nut coming loose. Running a wheel bearing with too little preload can be as bad as running one with too much pre load.
Remember that with our unitized bearings in a sealed housing the nut doesn't affect preload on the bearings. It only sandwiches the hub and tightens on the hub.

Regardless I'll need to double check and loctite my nuts to ensure they are tight!
