So I purchased my stage 2 kit used, everything SEEMS in order but I just started noticing some pictures around of an enclosed style air filter box. Mine is open, with just the seal against the hood. When I spoke to Whipple they said they only ever had one air intake box for their Stage 2 kits.

If you look through their own website of the pictures for the 2015 kit, some pictures have the stock throttle body and the open air box, then I see a picture of the 132MM throttle body ALSO going to the same open air box, then I see a picture of the 132MM throttle body going to an enclosed airbox.

Very confusing, can someone help out?

From what i understand if it has their tuning (calibration) and it's their stage 1-2 kit. it's closed airbox.

Tuner kit or competition kit has an open air filter element exposed.

My competition kit is open air filter.

Get a cobrajet intake and tune for it problem solved :D

Got it, that would make perfect sense.

Is the open air that bad?

From what I understand the Cobrajet requires relocating the intercooler tank and pump...right?

I have the open kit with their tune and Flight control but I requested the open.

I had opened mine up to hear a little more whine. Which indeed worked for me. But I also saw noticeably higher IAT's with it open. So I closed mine back up. I don't think it's a huge deal to have it open. Only thing I don't like is that it's sucking in hot air from the engine bay. But how much hotter is that air in comparison to the closed box? That I really don't know.

Hard to say what's better. My IAT1 reads about 2-3above ambient when moving and yes it will raise when stop and go with my open box. I do have a Ram Air hood.

So I am guessing the open air version doesn't seal all that well against the hood? Also looks like the enclosed is made of plastic versus the aluminum open, I think that is more of the temp difference than anything else? Aluminum gets heat soaked pretty easy.

The enclosed air box works better than the open to pull in outside fresh air. i actually dropped 1 mph in trap speed when i took the lid off. i did notice i could hear the blower whine with the air box open. but performance wise the enclosed box works!

I tend to get rev-hangs when the lid is off, too. That and very quick IAT rises are the downside of taking it off. I've just keep the lid on now.

FYI - for those wanting to go enclosed, the box and MAF plate needed to convert are $85 plus shipping.

I didn't realize there is still a good portion of the box open towards the driver fender, might look to try to completely close that up and route the fresh air from the grill area.

We have a snorkel that you can add to the box.

Sweet.
Is that hard plastic or soft?
Does the snorkel seal to the front grill piece then?
Can it be installed without pulling bumper?
My grill already has the hexes cut open on that side.
I home brewed something like this out of high temp foam, but its not perfect.

Is this already available?
I couldn't find it on your website
I was looking to buy Velossa ram air and connect it to my whipple air box. This will make the job easier.
