Ford Motor Company U.S. Sales Up 18 Percent; Ford Fusion, Ford Escape and new Lincoln

Marking the best April sales month since 2007, Ford Motor Company reported a total of 212,584 sales last month, which represents a 17.9-percent year-over-year increase. Unsurprisingly, leaders from the Blue Oval include the F-Series pickup, the Fusion sedan, and the Escape crossover.

Winner: Ford F-Series
Anyone who knows anything about the auto industry should find little surprise that, once again, the F-Series is Ford’s best-selling model. Thanks to a sales increase of 24 percent from last April to 59,030 copies, the F-Series continues to hold onto its crown as the country’s best-selling pickup range. While General Motors had yet to release sales data for the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra at time of publication, the Ram pickup doesn’t even hold a candle to the F-Series: while the Ram pickup has made great strides, it only sold 31,409 copies in April. Last month also marked the best April for the F-Series since 2006 and the 21st straight monthly sales increase for the model. Year-to-date, Ford has moved a grand total of 227,873 F-Series trucks, representing roughly 28 percent of Ford Motor Company’s sales in the first four months of 2013.

Winner: Ford Escape
The Escape has been on a roll the past few years – the outgoing model was one of the top-selling crossovers in its final year, and the all-new model that debuted last year has solidified its spot as one of Ford’s best sellers. Both last month and for all of 2013 so far, the Escape places third in Ford’s sales charts, only behind the venerable F-Series and the Fusion sedan. This past April was the best April sales month ever for the Escape, with sales up 52 percent to 25,826 units. Year-to-date, the Escape also saw the best sales increase – 30.7 percent – the best of any non-fleet vehicle in all of Ford Motor Company. (The Police Interceptor Sedan and Utility saw YTD gains of 530.3 and 445.2 percent, respectively; however, both models sold less than 1000 units YTD last year.)

Loser: Ford Flex
Despite being loved by automotive journalists and box enthusiasts across the country, the Flex is continuing its slow march into obscurity. Despite sharing its chassis, powertrains, and equipment with the Explorer, the less-than-traditional crossover shape seems to be hurting the fashionable Flex. Sales tumbled by 33.6 percent last month to just 1808 units. Meanwhile, Ford moved 14,204 Explorers off of dealership lots, representing an almost-flat growth of 5.8 percent. The Flex’s sales for the year were down 23.9 percent, to 7252 in the first four months of 2013.

Winner: Lincoln MKZ
Well, finally! The promised start of the Lincoln brand renaissance led by the all-new 2013 MKZ may finally be upon us. After production issues, it looks the MKZ production is fully up and running, with 4012 copies of the sedan finding homes, representing a rise of 115.4 percent. (It’s worth noting, however, that Lincoln sold just 1863 MKZs last April.) This was the actually the first time that the MKZ ever sold more than 4000 units in a month, setting a new monthly sales record. That said, the MKZ still has a long road ahead – just 7770 copies have been sold this year, which is off by 13.1 percent from the same period last year.

Loser: The Rest of Lincoln
Did we say it was a long road ahead for the MKZ? Excuse us; it’s going to be a long road ahead for the Lincoln brand. Those 4012 MKZ sales represented almost 53 percent of the brand’s sales for April. In fact, the MKZ outsold Lincoln’s other five models combined, which totaled just 3603 for last month. The biggest tumble was taken by the MKS sedan, which sold just 730 copies last month (down 43.8 percent); it’s likely that the newer, more advanced MKZ probably cannibalized sales from the long-in-the-tooth MKS. The MKT crossover also saw sales drop by a whopping 30.7 percent; although, that only represents 201 fewer sales than the 654 sold last April. Interestingly, the Navigator continues to outsell the MKT – sales were up by 26.6 percent to 680 units last month.

Don’t Count Your Chickens Yet: Ford Mustang
The muscle car wars continue! Last month, the Mustang lost out to the Chevrolet Camaro by just 414 copies; this month, the loss is even slimmer at just 198 units, with the Mustang moving 7751 copies to the Camaro’s 7949. We doubt Ford is worried, since an all-new Mustang is being introduced next year, while the Camaro is only getting a mid-cycle refresh. Again, the Dodge Challenger trails its cross-town rivals, but it’s catching up: Challenger sales rose to 4804 units last month.

Good numbers! GM was up only 11%

And the Mustang is really hanging strong :clap2:

7751 monthly units at this point in its life cycle is really very impressive.

Those are pretty good Mustang numbers, I expected worst. You think people are buying them up for fear that they will screw up the 2015?

For sales numbers riding on the back of an almost 10 yr old platform, those numbers are solid. Its putting up sales still head to head with a 4 year old Camaro generation.

4 straight months of increasing sales... they must be doing something right. Probably has to do with the nicer weather too.

What I'm really surprised about is it's basically flat from the same time last year.

Looks like camaro sales are flattening out too.

This is the calm before the storm. I think Camaro is going to be playing catchup for years after the S550 is introduced.

What'll be interesting to see is how its sales are affected by the refreshed look. The rear end is hideous. The new Mustang is less than a year away from its debut and the current one is still selling almost as well as the Crapmaro.

No, Camaro sales are not flat Y/o/Y. It's down 17% from same time last year. Mustang only -1%.
