Normally I see oil temps in the 220 range once warmed up. That has been normal. Since reading some of the engine break in threads, I have been more closely monitoring my oil temps. Today, in a very spirited session, the oil temp got up to 250. IIRC, redline was at about 300 on the gauge. I was just wondering what are the highs that people are seeing, especially on the track and in these warmer temperatures of summer.

Thanks

not on the track but...
Had mine out this past weekend.
Here in Atlanta with an outside temp of 95 I ran about 250 all day long.

Wow. I'm just checking because it is usually solid at around 220 with medium/hard driving. The extra effort drove it up to 250. So thanks for the info!

This was at NCM in late spring. Not even sure I want to be on the track in the next couple months it'll be so hot. This is why they require the 5w50 no doubt. Even some 10w60 would be beneficial at these temps.

I believe the engine oil cooler is on a thermostat. It should try to maintain 250F once it gets that hot.

Would be interesting to know what temperature the thermostat is fully closed (or open) but I'd bet it's much lower than 250 since oil will not live long at that temperature. There is no operational reason for the oil to be above 200 even. The oil cooler is marginally sized for this application it seems.

I don't think the oil cooler is on a thermostat, because the oil stays quite cool when the ambient temperatures are cold. I've run my car thousands of miles with the oil never reaching 200 degrees.

There is an oil thermostat near the oil filter

Huh, it doesn't do much to keep engine oil temperatures constant. If it's cool outside the engine oil stays very cold. If it's warm the oil gets hot quickly.

With an ambient air temp of ~95F I was also hitting 250F on the oil temp gauge. I was trying to vary the speed for break in and do some strong pulls in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th so (going +10 speed limit to -10 speed limit, over and over).

I don't baby the car at all and I haven't seen any oil temps over 220 yet and its been over 100 degrees in SC for days and days. Do you guys hitting 250 have oil coolers? I could see 250 on the track but you guys are hitting this and higher just on the street?

Got an oil cooler. I'd expect the temperature to drop at highway speeds. Are you seeing 220 on the highway?

All 350's have oil coolers.

I haven't seen temps above 225 but haven't driven hard in 90+ degrees yet.

Good point! I forgot all the GT350s had oil coolers stock. I wonder if the GT350R or TP cars have the same specs for the oil coolers. The range of oil temps seems to be wide and if all the cars have the same oil cooling capability, I don't understand that. You can only drive so hard on the street.
