On fordparts.com, the driveshafts part number for our V6, the 5.0 and the 5.2L is "4R602". But the cost of the V6's 4R602 is $618, compared to the 5.0s $601, and the 5.2L's $486.

Im pretty sure the 4R602 is a reference number to being a drive shaft in Fords system, but the actual part number is something different. Though, theres still something about our driveshaft that costs more...

Why does it seem that the driveshaft failure is overblown and always references 135mph as the point of failure? So far I've only seen that one youtube video where the failure occurs, despite the many failures have happened. Then this one video that one guy says that he is surprised that his driveshaft hasn't failed despite reaching the magic speed where failure occurs and rants about the poor choice ford made in choosing the two piece driveshaft. He even put on the video's title PSA about driveshafts failing.

If you are driving at that speed you better be at a real race track and not in public roads aka mexico.

I'm not saying it can't happen but it always seems to go back to that one dude going 135.

I think it is a reference. I was looking for pp swaybar mounting brackets and they used the same part number but had different versions.

5.0 driveshaft part number / MT= FR3Z-4R602-T $430
5.0 driveshaft part number / AT = FR3Z-4R602-P $320

3.7 driveshaft part number / AT = FR3Z-4R602-U $309
3.7 driveshaft part number /MT = FR3Z-4R602-L $441

Ford lists them as a propeller shaft. I'm unsure if this is the complete unit, or if the u-joints, bearings (etc...) are included in the price. Hard to research this on my phone. But we can see they aren't the same exact part number.

Yeah I've definitely past 125 and had no issues, just speeding ticket.
That's 50 mph over any posted speed limit. It's not 15 mph over but 50 mph over at least. The authorities will impound your mustang and take you to the station in hand cuffs for that kind of recklessness if you get caught. Just FYI, I do it too :D

Top speed doesn't break the drive shafts. It is high horsepower jolts that do that.

My 2016 3.7 A6 would hit the limit at 125 -128mph I have had my GT up to 145ish with no problems other than running out of suitable road conditions and clear visibility of what lies ahead.

Had a Vermont state trooper flash his lights at me while decelerating / exiting wide sweeper. Was probably in the low 100s at the time. The speed limit was 70, and I was lucky.

Got nailed in Washington by state trooper for 15mph over the speed limit of 55. This was a break, he showed me his radar readout @ 93mph. I had begun decelerating from about 110 as soon I had sight of him.

I can't hardly believe the DS failures happening below factory speed limiter settings. Unless a DS is out of balance or damaged high speed shouldn't be a cause for failure. I am more inclined to say coming out of the hole on rough concrete surface would be a better test for DS strength.

Be careful most roads are not suitable for sustained +150mph

Supposedly about 157 is top speed for the 5.0 and 135 for the V6.

With the factory governor, the speed limit is around 121-125. I know mine always capped at 121 but I've seen enough people say a little higher - definitely not 135 or more though.

Without a tune, probably depends on mods of course. I haven't pushed mine and paid attention to that.

Google searches and videos are showing around 135 with the governor and more without the governor. Around town, feel is not going to tell you much about the ultimate top speed. Could it be you had a weak one...that does happen from time to time. I don't know myself, so I definitely won't say it will definitely go 135 :)

The 4:39 mark in this video shows this car getting to 239km (148 mph)...but it took a heck of a long stretch to slowly climb there. I don't know if Ford did anything differently for the European spec cars.

That's an Ecoboost, Euro spec which usually means Performance Pack - an option the V6 doesn't have. It's limited because of the stock tires.

As for mine being a weak one, it handily hit that 121 over and over again and now goes that and higher without issue other than my hood shaking lol

But now since we're going for sources! The 145 is lower than the 148 you mentioned from the video though, that's because speedos (at least on our side of the pond) can read high, but not low, from the factory.

“The top speeds have been increased at every level. The V8 does 155 mph, the V6 doing 121 mph, and then the Ecoboost base doing 121 mph. But the Ecoboost Track Pack will do 145 mph,” Pericak told us during an interview at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Hey I wasn't trying to prove a point. OP asked top speed and some sources say higher than what you observed in yours. As I said above, I would not say I definitely know because I don't. I say go to the Ford literature or American magazine test sites to get a better idea.

So I've been hearing long before that the 14 v6 driveshaft snaps if you go past 125. Now apparently the 15 and up share the same driveshaft from the v6 to gt. If anyone can confirm this that would be great. What top speed have you guys gone in your cars if you're tuned? I'm still afraid to pass 125 even though I have been tuned and can go past that speed
I hate to say it but I'm definitely part of the newest generation of old guys. In 1967 I graduated from high school and my parents gave me the down payment on a new 67 GTO. That was considered a bad ass car at the time. It had a 400 cubic inch motor and 335 horsepower. I never ran it at the track so I don't know what time it would have ran but the truth I would have been in the high 14's low 15's. Top speed if the speedo was right was about 125. I truly think my 2016 mustang 3.7 v6 auto would have run circles around that GTO.. Our 6 cylinder today is way faster than a stock GTO from 67.That is amazing to me. It also would have stopped and turned way better than the GTO. I really glad that I lived long enough to see the third muscle car era. The first was in 1950 with the Oldsmobile rocket 88 which dominated NASCAR for quite a few years. I actually had the opportunity to own one of those for a time. Last year I traded in my v6 for a 19 GT and I'm driving that now. The new technology of today is awesome. I'm glad to be around to enjoy it and boy do I enjoy it.
