I searched but didn't find a thread on this (forgive me if there IS one)...

Talk to me about the AGS system and the reason to keep or discard it. I am thinking about a FMIC and was just wondering if the AGS is worth keeping. I get that it helps (slightly) with MPG but any other reason to keep it???

What does it weigh?

I also keep hearing different things about throwing code if it is removed.

It will throw a code if you remove it, but it can be deleted with a handheld tuner. I kept mine after installing a CPe intercooler, since mine is a daily and do most of my driving on the highway. Was pretty light, so the weight savings are negligible.

Another option some people do is cut off the bottom shutters to the intercooler and still keep the main one to the radiator. Does the PP have AGS, I know some trims, like the 50th anniversary don't.

Active grille shutters on the EcoBoost actually serve two purposes.

The turbocharged engine needs more cooling air than atmospheric engines, so Ford has opened up greater space behind the grille to allow this air to filter through.

The problem is a large grille like the Mustang's can act as a bit of a parachute, harming the car's aerodynamics.

When cooling demands are lower, shutters behind the grille can close, preventing as much turbulent air entering the engine, therefore reducing drag.

Ford has also utilized front wheel "aero curtains", that draw air through the front of the car and direct it around the front wheels--forcing air flowing around the car away from the wheels where it can create turbulence.

I removed mine when I got my RTR grille but kept the motor that regulates the AGS, zip tied it behind the bumper beam.

It won't throw a CEL, but it will store a code in the ECU.
If you check a car with a code reader and you removed your AGS, it will show the stored code U0284
No harm no foul.

I have checked mine with both a code reader and an Accessport and there are no codes, stored or otherwise.

The ots tunes from Cobb shut the shutter code off and for all tunes it's a standard thing to disable the shutter code. If you are totally stock tune expect a code to come up if you remove them.

I would get rid of it if you can eliminate any confusion the car has over its absence.

It will save weight and complexity. Ford only did it to get the very small increase in mileage for their cafe average.

And like any device, it can fail. If it fails closed, at minimum it could leave you stranded or cause overheating. Other brands have had engine failures from shutters stuck closed. I don't know how much of that was owner stupidity; you'd think you would get a dash light if they stuck.

I've had mine off for close to two years now without any codes, problems, or noticeable impact to mileage. They're pretty much worthless and in the way, in my opinion. Tear them out and don't look back, lol.

I did the AGS delete when I installed my cp-e intercooler...wanted to get as much air flow to the fmic as possible. The AGS was blocking that flow, so they had to go.
