Too much or too thick of oil can cause a rear main seal leak. My guess is they want some warranty work for the shop.

Anyways, I get home and check the receipt. They put in 9.33 quarts of
XO*5w50*QGT..
Congratulations on your GT350!

dealership should be idiot proof by now. Enter the car into the computer, and it tells them exactly what to do.
At this point, I'm pretty sure that if you idiot-proof anything, the universe just builds a better idiot to get around it.

Ok what does the oil cap say on it? Just look at it.... If this helps you... John
Sorry been out a bit. They told me to ignore what the oil cap and owners manual says. That's whats bugging me. Drove 30 miles this evening, wondering if I am doing damage. Did not notice anything our of ordinary.

Well looking at that it is 8 quarts, the 9.33 is a dollar amount, 9.33*8=74.64. Not that it justifies the oil type....

It looks like proper 8 quarts to me. $9.33 is per quart pricing.

And if it's free (first change free is the thread topic) who cares what they charged? Just dont go back next time.

I dont think you'll have HUGE issues with 5w50 doing damage per se. It's thicker but I have no idea how much 50 vs 20. I would take it back and make them replace it with 5w20 per the manual at no cost.

The previous model with the track packs use to say 5w50 on the oil cap but only if u had the track pack. Not the performance pack for the brembo pack or anything else. But 2015s and 2016s dont offer this package anymore

It is unlikely that you are doing damage. Remember what the numbers mean. Both 5W20 and 5W40 are approximately the same viscosity cold, and both are much thicker cold than they are at operating temperature. Once you get up to 185F the 5W20 is going to be much thinner than the 5W40, but the engine doesn't blow up while it's warming up. The main driver in cars going to lower viscosity is for CAFE standards, and it is unlikely to cause any problems, and may actually be better. But, as others have said, the recommended oil is 5W20 (5W30 for track use). That of course begs the question, if 5W30 is better for track use, why isn't it better the rest of the time? Answer - it is, but Ford gets credit for a 1-2% fuel economy advantage that you will never see at the cost of a little reduction in engine life. But, as long as the engine lasts 100K, Ford doesn't care, it's well out of warranty anyway, so if using 5W20 lowers engine life from 200K to 150K, it just doesn't matter.

These threads are a reminder that not all people heard one of the numerous fables as a child that end with: Q: Why did you do that? A: How can you be surprised? You knew I was a snake when you picked me up.
