I don't know where you guys are getting not to put oil on the oil filter gasket. The replacement supplement book that came with my oil filter wrench for my 2017 says (2)"wipe the engine seal surface and threads with a clean rag" (3)"apply oil to the new oil filter seal" Mine isn't an R so don't know if that would make any kind of difference. wouldn't think so. Voodooo I suggest you read the supplement manual again before you put out this kind of info and some one takes your word and doesn't read there supplement book and find out your statement isn't true.

Hey Scott, I agree w johnny1 that the old and new supplement tell us to oil the gasket. Can you clarify where, how you were advised not to?
Thanks:thumbsup:

Just changed my brand new 2017 's oil after a 1300 mile trip home from the dealer in Louisiana. Can confirm the cartridge housing takes a 27mm socket. Pretty painless thanks to everyone's previous posts here. Thanks all!

I did it yesterday, took a few pics. I'm going to make a thread about it. Did your filter stay attached to the housing when you removed the canister? Mine did and made a mess. I use tinfoil to wrap the wiring harness going to the steering controller, and saved that side of the access panel from oil, but the subframe side had a lot of oil drain onto it and around it, going into the belly pan :(.

Also, the small (pinky finger diameter) sized o-ring that came with the new filter, did you use that anywhere? I assume it's for other applications and not used on our cars...

Yup, my filter stayed attached to the housing while removing the canister. I had bought a funnel with drain tube(plugged at the end) that just fit in the opening in the belly pan (the filter access door opening) , and it caught 90% of the oil that flowed out when removing the canister. Scared me at first when the oil came pouring out but the funnel with sealed drain plug caught most of it. Only had to wipe down a little bit from the belly pan. No I couldn't figure out what that small O ring was for either....

I like to disassemble things.

IIRC, on my VW GTI when I removed the plastic canister there's a long plastic piece that runs inside the canister and beyond it's length, the filter element goes over it and on the end you put a small o-ring like this that mates somewhere deep inside the oil filter housing.

Anyways, here's some pics I took, I'm going to edit and clean them up a bit and make a thread later today.

This is how the filter housing is on a VW GTI, note the end of the pole on left side of pic, a small o-ring goes there. Perhaps the new GT350 filter, shared with Fusion and F-150, on those applications it uses the o-ring?
