OK so if you go up to 373 would it make your second top out before 60?

That depends on what tire size your running and redline. There are online calculators to determine the mph each gear goes to using the internal transmission ratios of the 6R80 transmission. I can get to 65 with my 4.10s and 7500 RPM redline. That's a 2nd- 3rd gear quick pull and I top 65 in 2nd with 4.10s. You should definetly be able to hit 60 in 2nd with 3.73s, even with a stock 6800 RPM redline, as long as you run 27-28" tires. [ame]https://vimeo.com/132769561[/ame]

Marius why did you choose 4.10's over 3.73?

Marius why did you choose 4.10's over 3.73?

I was coming from a car with 3.31s stock and a 26.5 inch tire which made my effective gear ratio around a 3.55. I felt that there would be very little difference going to 3.73s from my 3.55 gear.

So I went up to 4.10s. Also calculating rpm to mph using the online calculators, the 4.10s allow you to use 4th gear to get up to 118 MPH which I felt was the perfect speed to use the 4 gears meant for acceleration. Gears 5 and 6 are both overdrive gears.

Before I would hit 120 in 3rd and the car would bog down on the shift into 3rd. With the 4.10s every upshift puts me around 5800-6000 RPM, where peak power is made. So the shift from 2-3 is not nearly as bad as before.

Realistically, If your coming from a 3.15 gear, you will definitely feel the 3.73 change. 4.10s are just if you want to wring all the extra feeling of torque you can out of the 3.7. The numbers are not hugely different between 3.73s and 4.10s, but the 4.10s will feel like more of a kick.

And its fun to be able to lose traction when you mat the gas in first and fishtail on the 1-2 shift. I'll even lose traction in 2nd gear sometimes if I turn the traction control off and the weather is cold.

Yeah Thanks for your information Marius. I definitely want to do 3.73 gears in my car. My goal for the car is to get it into the 12's in the quarter mile. That is good enough for me for this car.

So the consensus is that the traction-lok in the v6 isn't built to handle a 3.7? Can someone with more background elaborate?

Also, I'm assuming you wouldn't require a tune with this set up?

The biggest thing to get into the 12's is the right tire. You need a tire than can cut at least 1.8 60"s at the track, because the car has the power to do it. If I ran a 1.8 60" instead of my 2.1" I would have knocked at least .4 seconds off my et, and ran a 13.1 with street tires. Adding a set of big and littles would definitely have the car in the high 12's. These cars are capable of some decent times with simple bolt ons.

No, I don't know why people think that. I have put over 52k miles on my traction lok and over 100 passes at the drag strip, and it still spins both wheels. I've been modded for at least 30k miles. The traction-lok is fine for the v6. Not the best LSD out there, but it does the job fine. Now if your looking for the absolute best LSD and want to spend 2k on one go ahead, but you will only get diminished returns. I'd much rather try and find a used procharger kit for 2-3k and you'll notice that quite a bit more.

The nice thing about the trac loc is that it costs almost nothing to rebuild.

If I tune my v6 and install new headers and an axle back exhaust, would installing new gears making a significant difference? Is it worth installing new gears after having installed a few good performance mods?

Gears are one of the best performance mods you can make to just about any car. I have 3.73s in my 900hp 95 gt. You'll feel a huge difference.

So in other words it would make even more HP after having new exhaust system and tune?

Negative! But it will multiply the torque to the rear wheels and get you down the road faster. Or get you off the line with more power! A good set of gears is,worth a few tents of a second in a drag race. Try to think of it as your tires spinning faster.
