Yes lots and lots of Americans using that stuff which is great stuff.

But for the warranty period I'd really like to stick to 'warranty approved' fluids, hence the nature of this exercise.

I'll be using Penrite Racing 10/10ths 5W30 once the warranty period is up.

Is the oil that comes in the 5.0 litre engine from the factory a different specification to the the recommendations above? In other words is is it an oil geared for breaking in the engine or is it the same oil as what is used at the first service?

Bump.

Oils ain't oils :D

G RUSH are you going with another brand of oil or are you sticking to Motorcraft?

I'm also interested to read what engine oil people are using.

I've gone with the Penrite Enviro+ Fully Synthetic 5w-20 which actually states on the back it meets Ford specification as per our service manual. Haven't done the change yet but need to get on it

I wonder why a Ford Dealer put 5W-20 in your car, when the Australian Mustang Manual that comes with your car, says 5W-30.

My Dealer also advised I should use 5W-30.

I am going to use 5W-30, Royal Purple or Mobil 1.
I have been using 5W-30 Mobil 1 in my HSV Clubsport.

The debate on which grade and brand to use in oils, will go on infinitium.

The cap on the actual engine says 5w-20 - sounds good to me

My manual says 5W-20 synthetic blend.

Refer to

Australian Owners Handbook
Edition No 3
Page No 194
Under Specifications and Capacities
It states 5W-30 Grade

My dealer told me Ford Australia have made this recommendation due to the Australian Climatic conditions.

Makes perfect sense Red Stang 302 regarding the recommendations.

I have noticed the fine print on the manual that states Ford reserves the right to change specifications (specs change, can't argue with that) without notice or obligation.
Really? Without obligation? So if an engine experiences issues and they discover the owner was following their manual the warranty would not cover them if they were not communicated? Are they f*&^%g insane?

I'll be contacting my dealership as well as contacting those involved at Ford to let them know of their obligations under the ACCC.

I asked Ford Service Australia about the specs as the oil cap on the car states 5w-20, and the Service Guide shows SAE 5w-30 ACEA A5/B5-10 meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C913-D.
They informed me that the manual is correct.

So I did my first change a few weeks ago at 7500k's using Penrite full synthetic 5w-30. This meets Ford spec M2C913-B/C/D.
Interesting that the container states that it may also be used where 5W-20 is recommended!:)

Why am I not surprised at all this!

Don't like the idea of the 5w-20 either, seems like its more for fuel economy like the 86 which specified a 0w-20 and felt like water! I switched to Nulon 5W-30 Long Life as I was running E85 and then boost. But really unless you're going to do oil analysis, hard to say what works and what doesn't.

Nulon has got the GT ratings covered with another product so I'll probably use that.

After seeing this, I immediately drained the oil from my car.

Now after just a few miles, its making a terrible knocking sound.

Another thing to consider is not all 5W-30 oils are equally spec'd.

The viscosity @ 40deg. & 100deg. plus Viscosity index can vary somewhat between various manufacturers.

Some 5W-30s will be closer to 0W-30, while some will be closer to 10W-30.

The regulation seems to be quite broad in it's acceptance.

It may not mean much to people in the tropics, but in the colder states it can have an effect on cold-start wear.
