I, for one, would be perfectly happy to have a performance car without paying any additional royalties to Shelby...let the money go to the goodies and not the name.

In my opinion ford needs to stop playing musical chairs with their model names and develop something more uniformed that can be used across various generations. Base, ST(inline 4), GT, GT350(Race car), GT500(grand coupe).
If I was Ford I'd do the following.

Mustang (V6)
Mustang ST or SVO (turbo 4)
Mustang GT (NA V8)
Mustang Boss 302 (Race Car NA Hi Rev V8)
Shelby GT350 (Boss with the Luxury items NA Hi Rev V8)
Shelby GT500 (All out luxury and performance Turbo/SC V8)

I like the Shelby name. Shelby GT500 just sounds right, IMO.

IIRC, back in June, Mustangs Daily said its "sources inside Ford" indicated that the Mach 1 is slated to be re-introduced, possibly in 2017.

Yea I just saw that again too, but I'm highly skeptical of that timing. We've gotten some pretty credible hints that the SVT product is coming out in 2016. Sure it'll be expensive and sure there will be a little void left by the B302 that can plugged by the Mach1, but SE's usually come much later into the cycle, when they need a little jolt and some nice fanfare.

Who knows, maybe with the rumors that there will be a greater emphasis on special editions with the S550 we'll see a more aggressive rollout, but until we see that happen I don't see why they would go against typical Mustang convention.

My understanding it was 350 feet from the production line to an office(Shelby's office)? Or something to that effect.

I could live with this.

That's it. They were trying to figure out what to label the car an Shelby had someone count off the paces from his office to the production offices. It was 350 steps. The GT 350 was thus born. lol

Yes, and Shelby had zero to do with the GT500 production Mustang anyway, except licensing his name. So the name meant nothing from an engineering or handling dynamics perspective.
Wrong. Carroll Shelby set performance & price-point goals for the current GT500. He then stepped back & let Jameel & his team figure out how to get 'er done.

Wishful thinking?

Ford seems to be refreshing models every 3 years now, so 2018MY would possibly be S550's first facelift.

How about a 2017MY Mach 1 which introduces the forthcoming mechanical changes for the next model year? A bump in power over the GT, revised suspension setup etc?

Just like the '09 Bullitt introduced the '10 mechanical changes.

TT, if i were to guess I'd say you're right about 2018 mechanical changes. Maybe we finally see DI? Im just not sure Ford has enough resources to go around to get the S550 out in 2015, SVT in 2016, Mach 1 in 2017 and then a pretty big refresh in 2018. Seems like they could spread that out.

I think 2018 would be a necessary refresh and the S550 can't wait 2 years for a hipo model, not with the Z28 out there. The easiest thing it seems would be to push back the special edition.
