is the 3.55 much different than the 3.31? I'm looking at two used gts I drove the 3.31, I have 3.31 in my eco just curious how much different it is. Also do base model gt have linelock?

It's a little bit different with 3.55. Your overall rpm will be a bit higher in each gear at the same speed which means each gear will have a bit more torque to the wheels.
I think all GT's have line lock.

You also have to take into consideration that the gears in the MT-82 are different between the V8 and EB.

I have 3.55 and unless I'm at a dead stop I can start in 2nd gear without riding the clutch at all. I ordered these gears specifically for this reason.

The 3.31 ratio is the "economy" ratio. So if MPG is what you're after go for it.

Yes the base model has line lock.
Remember a 5.0 is going to have more torque than your Eco..that's why the trans ratio is so much different in the first two gears..to get the car moving.
All depends on what your plans are with the car. If staying NA and its a "fun" car no way I would want the 3.31's. I would even suggest looking at a PP car with the 3.73's.
If boost is in your future then 3.31's all the way.

So you ordered a 6 speed & 3.55 so you could skip 1st? Why, did 1st gear steal your lunch money in grade school?

3.31 should gave better fuel economy and top speed. Stock we have a limiter that takes away the top speed advanatge. But the 3.31 will still accelerate faster at the top end (when it is in 5th, but the 3.55 is in 6th).

3.55 should acclerate a bit better if you can get the power to the ground.

The average driver in normal driving probably wouldn't notice much difference.

Personally, I think the 3.31 is the best all around gear for a GT. Especially if limited to the 2015-17 stock 7000 rpm rev limit.

Agreed with there probably being negligible difference in feeling between the two. Made a much bigger difference back in the day when they came stock with 2.73's or 3.15's.

Way back in the day, they only had 3 or 4 gears at most, also.

Back in the day first gear was 2.78 not 3.66.
So a MT82 & 3.31 gives you a lower first gear than a Top Loader and the Super Drag pack's 4.30 final drive.
3.66 x 3.31 = 12.11
2.78 x 4.30 = 11.95

Which is why your dad or granddad thinks a serious performance car should have a ~4.11 final drive

i ended up testing the 3.31 and 3.73 pp. I like the 3.31 better the pp car ran out of 1st gear so fast and wheels were spinning in second with 305 Mickey thompsons under part throttle. it did not seem like a good option for a dd. the 3.31 seems exactly the same as my eco..same mph for rpm.
