If your airbags pop, you'll know exactly what your air fuel mixture was by looking in a mirror.

I looked at the factory one and its plastic also. So what's the difference.

A gauge?

I seriously doubt autometer ran that through deployment tests with airbags. The added mass of a gauge hitting your grape could be a very significant difference.

It's already covered. In a crash the cover doesn't go flying just moves out of the way.

Then go for it. I hope you never get in a wreck, but if you do, could you have the presence of mind to update this thread?

I've installed tweeters and 3" midrange speakers in A-pillars with custom fiberglass and have seen those cars (not all, but a few) after airbag deployments and the pillar with the added weight of speakers did not harm the driver. If there was a "strap" to keep it from flying like is the case in new vehicles, that broke most of the time. But the pillar must have gone out, bounce of the windshield, and then the commotion was over so it really didn't go anywhere else. None of these cars were rolling down mountains, though. People who I do this for (which I should say isn't like thousands of people... but gotta protect myself) must sign a waiver indicating they understand a safety feature of their vehicle will be compromised and that the pillar may cause harm in the event of an accident with or without airbag deployment. Same sort of legalize as when you sign a waver at a drag strip. So... take that for what it's worth.

Isn't the pillar airbags curtain style, so it's not like the wheel air bag that fires directly at your face.

Yes, and typically it simply moves over the window seal and pops out the a-pillar plastic. In some cars it won't even move the a-pillar plastic, just pop out the black seal or come in-between it and the seal.

Gauge or no gauge, I assure you that airbag is coming out - violently or not.

Frankly I personally would not be worried about a gauge. They're not heavy. Just make sure your wiring for it does not interfere with the airbag and I never zip tie wires to airbag wiring, and recommend others not to as well. Leave the airbag (usually yellow connectors) wiring alone.
