Lol I can see it now, 40 years into the future:

"This GT350 example is the more desirable , early non oil filter canister cars , even with a reproduction filter!"

If I were to guess, both parts are interchangeable. Newer one can put on the older filter design and older one can put on the new style.

I'm thinking Ford is discontinuing the older filter design as they are sending out a recall for the filter wrench.
Could be, but as stated above, it would likely require an adapter of some sort. The cartridge-type housings (I have them on three of my cars) have threading on the outer rim of the nylon housing, while the canister-type filters have threading at the center of the filter.

Unless they designed one with threads in the middle just like the spin on filter and just an Oring on the out side???? I like the idea of being able to use either one. My 17 is an August build date so I should have the spin on. I will not have a chance to check until this weekend.

The cartridge plastic caps I always see and service always have threads on the outside of the cap. Never the I.D. The plastic would strip way to easy if it were the inner portion.
From looking at my (2016 track pack) the 2017 R in the original post has a new filter housing. I also do not see the pressure valve or snap ring in the op pic.
OP can you get the cars vin # by any chance. If I can this for my car I'll swap it when I swap out my oil hoses this weekend.

As of today that's the only option .i didn't see any option for a cartridge filter. I wasn't able to pull one off the shelf we've never sold one .

I'm betting this is the filter that we are getting along with a wrench to accommodate it with the filter/wrench kit that is being sent out.

Hmmm... my R was produced on 3/2/17. I am on my way to pick it up so I'll check out the oil filter this afternoon.

That would be quite a housing to install!?!?

The original notice of the oil filter and wrench can be found here:
http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1777417&postcount=1

I didn't see any indications of a swap to a canister type filter.
Not the housing! the canister type filter you silly rabbit!! It is speculation. However, being that a canister type is being used on new build 350's it seems possible. Curious as how it works with existing hardware unless they changed something which according to Ford there are no mechanical changes.
