Random off topic question, but I spent the weekend getting my 2001 Explorer Sport Trac back in roadworthy shape and was wondering if anyone has any experience or recommendations for a "pour in the gas tank" bottle of fuel system cleaner. Suggestions? Truck has 231k miles on it.

And no, I won't be putting it in my Mustang. :D

Take the injectors out and clean them. Couple hours of work tops for a guaranteed job. Can also replace the seals on them while you're doing this since the car has 230K.

If you must use a cleaner, BG makes one of the best that's hard to get as a regular consumer except via the interwebs (i.e., it's not at a parts store). It's called BG 44K. That's what I've used in previous older cars and actually legitimately noticed a difference.

Thank you! Personal experience with a brand is exactly what I was hoping for.

I prefer Seafoam. Boat motor mechanics and motorcycle people swear by it. I've put half a can in a six gallon motorcycle tank to clean the injectors etc. I had a Honda 350 four wheeler that had a stuck float that it cured.

In a vehicle that old and mileage I wouldn't hesitate to put 2-3 cans in it.

I just put a can of seafoam in the tank every time I change oil.
If you use a good gas, they already have all the detergent in it.

Seafoam has always worked well in a pinch for me. Had a BMW that sat for over 2 years. Changed the battery, drained as much fuel as possible, put some new gas in with a can of seafoam. Ran rough for a little bit and after a few minutes, it cleaned up and ran perfect. Car has 228k on it.

I knew a guy that thought he needed new injectors. His 1992 Plymouth laser barely ran. He put a bottle of this in it.... Ran great after he let it idle for a bit and drove it around some. Afterwards he'd always dump a bottle in his tank when he got his oil changed. His old car ran great afterwards.

I use the amsoil injector cleaner. I use it every oil change. I can't say I have noticed a difference because I have been using it since my vehicle was new as preventative maintanence but it has good reviews.

BG 44K is the only stuff that actually works, and is part of some dealer service programs, which is why I used to always buy it a the Honda stealership; they kept plenty in stock because some (most) Honda engines burn oil and get so much carbon buildup and valve deposits they have to treat almost every car that comes in for a tuneup.

Shit is rocket fuel compared to everything else. Plenty of info online, check the BITOG forums. Call around to dealers and independent service centers and you'll find it, usually around $18-22 a bottle.

That said, if the injectors sat for 2+ years with ethanol fuel in them, or 5+ years with real gas, they probably need to be removed and actually cleaned by RC Engineering or someone similar.
