Yes the new clock spring is required, the programming is stored elsewhere, you have to program it to unlock the new features, it still retains the memory of your old buttons.
It may be a better route for you to just buy the programming services from the original guy who wrote up the forum...
Whoops typo. To my knowledge it must be changed.
In order to control the 2018+ buttons, it needs a 2018+ clockspring. Your current clockspring won’t have any idea, even with programming, about new buttons, like the pony button, because they simply didn’t exist until the refresh.

It sounds like you may have missed some steps. Did you follow everything in the linked guide, including purchasing of all parts? I did this on my 2015 and you must follow all steps.

OP, there is a spreadsheet link in this guide. You need to customize the As-Built Data at the bottom with all the options listed at the top of the sheet. You need to do this for the SCCM (this is what will flip your buttons to correct positions) and the IPC (for mileage and the MyColor settings)
