I have a 2015 PP. Only drive line mods are Power Pack 2, MGW shifter and Ford Racing Sport Catback Exhaust. I like the thrust, but hate running out of first gear as soon as I shift into it.

Seriously thinking about changing from 3:73 gearing to 3:31. Wondering whether people with 3:31’s and 6 speed are liking their acceleration pulling away from a stop, what speeds they get in each gear and fuel mileage. I’ve heard 30 mpg might be possible?

Thanks!

Can still get 30mpg hwy with 3.55 as well. I've driven 3.31 base and a 3.73 PP, the 3.31 although a minor difference between 3.55, is not so minor when switching from 3.73. It may even feel sluggish. It does to me and I have 3.55 gears. I do mixed driving so I generally hover around 17 mpg average, but it doesn't really matter to me that much lol.

In 6th cruising at like 70 I'm just under 2k RPM, 80 brings me to 2.1k. If your commute is long I don't see why you wouldn't be able to achieve 30mpg. The 3.31 would be lower in the RPM range but then if you wanna pass in 6th it might feel more sluggish. If you're after MPG strictly go 3.31, if you don't want to sacrifice acceleration too much I say go 3.55.

I have 3.55 gears and on long commutes I cruise control at 65mpg. The best I've gotten on a trip is 28mpg all hwy miles. Pretty good. My combined MPG is 18.5 mpg I think. It's not a daily for me and most the miles are hwy miles.

I went from 3.73 to 3.31 and my daily commute mpg didn't change much less than 1mpg and i drive 80 miles a day.

Thank y’all. Sometimes I get 24 mpg, highway, average probably 21 or so. Having a little longer first gear and still be able to accelerate hard is what I’m wishing for (without having to SC).

I have a PP GT and I enjoyed the 3.73s when I wasn’t boosted. Once I got my whipple I swapped to 3.31s because I felt the 3.73 was less useable. I like the 3.31s with my whipple but I wouldn’t run them on a N/A car.

I just swapped out my PP 3.73 rear end with a 3.31 rear. Way more usable gearing for my tvs car but for na stick with the 3.73

First gear only serves to get you moving, wanting more from it is flawed thinking.
This. 3.31 with headers catback intake and tune felt noticeably slower than my stock pp in all of first and second gear. Autocrosses it and thought something was broken.

Unless forced induction, you'll be going backwards.

So why do most of the ESP guys run 3.31s? And the FS guys whine about the too short 3.73?

And why does the 2018 MT82 gears get taller?

Just to revive this thread...

I have a 6MT with 3.55 and will be fitting the GT350 IM. The 3.55 is far too long for the street IMO. You have to really break the law to get to the top of even 2nd gear on most roads. Fuel economy is not a big concern for me but I feel shorter gearing would really wake the car up.

Should I go for 3.73 or 4.09? Is the 4.09 too short for spirited driving and track days with a manual?

If running 3.31, don't bother shifting into 6th until you are at 55. Off the interstate, get used to shifting back and forth 5th and 6th.
Fuel mileage is pretty good at 70 ish.

Because the gearing needs to match the track. FS guys whine because the courses often go to 65+mph and we redline at 59 in 2nd.

The ESP guys are probably running smaller diameter tires (18" wheels?), and they also have more hp, so they'll hit their redline even faster. They'd need to go down to at least 3.55 just to correct for tire diameters, and 3.31 if they want any additional top speed in 2nd.
