My car is a lightly bolted on manual vert. Went to my local performance shop to get a price on doing a gear swap. I was asking about 3.55 or 3.73's. He said to go with 4.09's. :eyebulge:

There is also a chance that I could be bolting on a Whipple over winter, he still didn't flinch.

I ran the numbers. Highway cruising doesn't look bad, but first gear starts to look more like a tractor pulling gear than anything.

Anyone running them, any feedback?

if you are considering a whipple, don't bother lol i have 3.73's with FI and i'm highly considering a swap to 3.55's. i couldn't image 4.09's with a blower. 1-4 gears would be insanely fast.

4.09's? Way too much gear. I'm afraid to ask what shop recommended them. Jannety LOL?

You guessed it! He actually said at minimum.
I think you should remind him that you drive a modern DOHC V8 with some balls, not a 4.6 single cam that could not get out of its own way.

Steep gears were the bandaid for a gutless engine decades ago. Nowadays you don't need to shift into 5th gear at 100mph just so you can accelerate quickly.

Most people would say 3.73s are a bit too much, so he wants you to go into the 4s?

i have 3.73 NA and im not sure how i would like it with FI. i imagine i could manage fine with mine but to go into 4s with FI sounds ridiculous. i already find 1st borderline useless at times.

This engine with the MT-82 does not need 4.09s. 3.73 is already really short, basically the same final drive as a TR3650 with 4.10 in the 01-10 Mustangs. The coyote has a much wider powerband than the old wheezy 4.6, too.

Don't change anything if you're considering FI.

I also have 3.73 but I am supercharged. 1st gear is useless, 2nd is better with sticky tires but it still lets go after 4.5k rpms. No fun until you hit 3rd gear which is powerful and grips. This is with the Nitto NT555G2 in the rear. I am going to try one more set of sticky tires (maybe the Michelin PSS) before I make the decision to go with 3.55.

Ted knows a lot about the newer Camaros but is clueless on the newer Mustangs say 2011 to present time. Plus he overcharges for his work and parts. And God forbid you let him tune your car...........

I would consider 3.35 gears with torsen rear diff, or 3.15 with standard diff if going FI. Shorter gearing with the MT-82 higher then 3.73 is not ideal unless staying N/A or doing a Tremic swap. 3.73 gears is what I have now N/A and I traffic I mostly skip first and use second to start when crusing around town.

I remember when my fox body mustangs had 2.81 or 2.83. Going to a 3.08 which were automatic rear end gearing was an upgrade. Obviously everyone went 3.55 due to the low 225hp. I always thought 3.31 was a good in between gear. That's what I have on my car now and with 450hp, more than enough gear. At 80mph I'm hovering around 2k rpm. IMO, I wouldn't go any higher and more so if you're throwing a blower on there.

What's your outlet? If you drag race on slicks every weekend get the 4.09s; hell go to the good old 4.56s if you have an automatic.

If you're the daily driving type, 3.55 is the max I would personally have on a supercharged 5.0 S550. In your specific case, I would leave your stock gears alone and put the money into the blower fund.

I had 3.73s and once I put my whipple on it was too much so I went to the 3.31 and the power is much more useable now.
