It's renewal time for me this week and had started getting quotes earlier in the month in preparation. Unfortunately someone decided to run into the back of my BMW at traffic lights, so now I have an unsettled claim against me at the most inconvenient time. My current insurers are treating it as non-fault and the car is fixed but other insurers can't do similar until the insurance database is updated.

Anyway my renewal has only risen much as I would have expected - £30/£40 - but as its Aviva i've kinda maxed out my allowable mod quota, which is not a situation i'm keen to live with for another year.

Got a highly competitive quote from A-Plan underwritten by KGM however they didn't list my mods on the quote. Upon querying that their statement on what i've declared (all of them - including what I intend doing in the next month or so) is:

"We are aware of the modifications, they are covered as follows - If the vehicle is stolen or written off the insurers will pay out the amount the vehicle is worth in a specialist market including the modifications not what has been spent on the modifications, if the vehicle is repairable they will contribute towards the modifications taking into account age, wear and tear"

I usually like to see things written down, but have any of you got any life experiences/comments/anything regarding insuring through A-Plan or (whisper it) the necessity to make a claim on modified/specialist cars?

I appreciate they have quite a good rep for modified cars...

Thanks

A-Plan came highly recommended with the Monaro and VXR8s, so I know they're trusted in that world. I've never used them, or claimed via them so I can't say more than that. I would, however, use them if necessary.

Flux have told me they pay out the value of the mods as long as I have the invoices.

Not had to test that out yet though.

Although I do think they're pretty pricey as I'm paying £920 with a single year's NCB and 6 points.

What you've quoted from A-Plan does not exactly fill me with joy since my insurance is due on the 12th and they were my go-to company since mine is mapped and most companies aren't keen on that.

I take it you're not enamoured with A-Plan's apparent payout being based on the mods depreciating with the car? A-Plan (£360) are quoting significantly cheaper than Adrian Flux (£490) quoted me. 10 years ncb, 3 points and one o/s claim.

Not really.

Fair enough I wouldn't expect to be reimbursed for 100% of the cost of the mods, but it would have to be close to it since in order to be put back in the same position as before, you would need to find a car with all the same mods. How likely is that?

Secondly, modded cars GENERALLY command less than "unmolested" examples and although that probably doesn't apply to Mustangs, it wouldn't surprise me if an insurance company decided to apply that logic.

Mine is done for another year *massive sigh of relief*

Same old story with me - nowhere comes close to what Admiral can offer (I also have the fiesta with them on a multi car policy).

Did a few comparison websites which came in at around the £900 mark for the year - for the Mustang only, spoke to Adrian Flux on the phone - £1075 was the best they could do. There was a suspiciously low quote from More Than @ £599 but I'm sure if I went direct to them it will have been bull.

Admiral did my Mustang for £675 which I'm pretty damn happy with.

30 years old
1 accident (my fault) Oct 2015
10k annual mileage
2 years no claims - on the Mustang, 5 with the Fiesta

Side note - the girl I was speaking to on the phone googled what the Mustang looked like & was very impressed

Admiral don't seem keen on me either - they insist I call them and won't give me online quotes

Went with A-Plan Thatcham in the end. It was a pleasant change actually talking to someone who knew what the mods were without having to run back and forward to underwriters. All mods declared including a couple I want to do in the next few months. No suggestion they're going to stop me doing what I want. Limited mileage which is no problem as its not a daily. £320 + broker fee of £40. I like Aviva as an insurer but they were quoting £200 a year more and wouldn't let me do anything else to the car. I don't like them that much.

A-Plan Thatcham have quoted me £750 compared to my renewal from Flux of £1030!

Flux pay out 100% the value of the mods upon a total loss versus A-Plan's "market value of the car including mods".

Hmmm...you pays ya money and ya makes ya choice. :D

I shall being phoning Flux tomorrow to laugh at their attempt to get near A-Plan.

They quote me similar to Aviva however at least they seemed to know what they were talking about.
