I see that Steeda sells an aftermarket collar which claims to be better built than the stock one. My question is, has anyone ever seen or heard of a collar being broken and unable to go into reverse?

I have heard of it.

Plastic gets brittle over time and after being subjected to heat cycles, metal does not have this problem.

Never seen it first hand other plastic components such as the turn signals radio buttons don't seem to break off in the vehicles early stages of life.

my reverse lockout crumbled on my 15 and another guy in the local car group has had the same happen to him. I've used both the steeda and barton billet collars and both work well and install easy peasy. They look better, feel better, and are more durable than stock. win-win-win.

Mustang.... Duhhhh
Mine just disintegrated on my way to work this morning... Literally the strangest thing... seemed fine backing out of my garage, and then it just crumbled to bits in my hand during my 5 minute commute. Looks like I'll need a better replacement.

I replaced mine with a metal collar and it looks better (not a molded piece of plastic). When I made the changeover, my factory collar was still glued on there like a mutha so I'm not sure how many years it would have taken to fail, lol. The main reason I did so was to eliminate a slight buzz from having my shifter mounted so solidly. The new collar has an internal o-ring in it which resolved the issue. Now I only get a buzz if I leave something small and lightweight in the cup holder.
