Inside Whipple’s S550 Mustang Supercharger

The 2015 Mustang’s sleek design and lowered hood has created new challenges for the aftermarket, which has called for new designs and creative engineering for the ever-popular superchargers that go hand-in-hand with the Mustang.

Whipple Superchargers tells us that the lowered height of the new Mustang was a severe issue which prevented it from carrying over the rear feed 2.9L supercharger without changing engine mounts to lower the engine — so they went about finding a different solution.

With its success in other applications, Whipple’s front feed design allowed it to keep the blower height up at maximum, providing the most area above and below the intercooler core and reducing power-robbing “boost stack.” As they note, the front feed design allows the air to go forward and backwards and the increased plenum volume below the supercharger allows equal distribution above and below the intercooler core, leading to less pressure drop, increased heat rejection and overall better airflow.
