Mustang Fans Celebrate Birthday in China Amidst Rising Pony Car Culture

Despite a price tag more than double that of the U.S., the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro have brought their rivalry to Asian shores, particularly China, where Ford has sold over 6,000 Mustangs since 2015 and seen sales jump 90-percent in the first quarter alone, helping to ignite the rising pony/muscle car culture in China.

As reported by our friends at Automotive News, the long-standing American pony car rivalry have hooked a segment of the Chinese population who find the two automotive icons attractive not only because of their relative rarity in China, but also due to the pony car’s unapologetically loud, powerful and quintessentially American character.

This was evident this past week when a group of Mustang enthusiasts gathered in downtown Shanghai to celebrate the Mustang’s 53rd birthday with music from the Beach Boys and Johnny Cash intermixing with sounds of the 5.0L Coyote revving in the background.
